Breaching Orca!

We saw a pod of Orca swimming past the ferry as we were coming home from a weekend on Whidbey Island. The trip which normally takes about 15 minutes from shore to shore took closer to 25. It's only the polite thing to do when you've got 50-odd Killer Whales swimming right past you. I mean, if we went too fast, we might frighten the wee beasties. No. Better to slow way the hell down so that they aren't inconvenienced by the big ugly boat getting in their way.

Oh, and it was pretty cool for the people on the boat too. :)

They were maybe 50 yards off the side of the boat at one point and I just happened to be looking in the right direction when one went airborne. Clear out of the water for a split-second and then SPLASH! Ooooohs and Aaaaahs from everyone lucky enough to see it, of course. Damn, but those things are beautiful!

I'd never seen them in the wild before. Sure, I've been to Sea World and all, but it's not quite the same, is it?
