"If I Should Die in the Old Drop Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home..."

May 18, 2005 02:06

Well this is it for a while for me. I have just finished packing up all of my equipment for Airborne school, and I have to get up at 5:00 this morning to get ready to go to the Buffalo airport. I should be at Fort Benning, GA around 1-1:30, depending on traffic from the airport in Columbus to the base. I'm excited but nervous at the same time. Being home for the last few days has been great, and I can actually say that I'm sad to be leaving my family once again during the summer months...it's been an ongoing occurrence for every summer since before I was in high school. I'm just going to tell myself that it's only three weeks as opposed to the near seven that I spent in England last summer. Once the training starts time will fly by, and I'll be back in DK working at Quality and hating every minute of it before I even realize it.

After talking to Jake earlier tonight, I'm much more confident about going down there. I know that I will do well and all I have to do is put my mind and my body into it, while keeping my mouth shut and my eyes and ears open. This is exciting, it's going to be my first time on an Army post all by myself. I'm going to gain a great deal of experience from this, and hopefully it will help make next year as an MS III a bit easier. Prepare to see an even more slimmed out Nateage when I get back, I'm going to sweat so much fat and water weight out while I'm down there...which is fine with me. I have no qualms with losing the slight gut that I've developed from drinking recently.

Thanks to everyone else I talked to online tonight who helped to ease my nerves and gave me kind words of confidence and good luck wishes...it really means a great deal to me.

Here's my mailing address in case anyone feels like being really cool and writing to me:

CDT Nathan A. Christopher
Headquarters, 1st Bn (Abn), 507th Inf
Fort Benning, GA 31905

I'd really appreciate the mail, but I'm not going to get my hopes up or anything. I'll be bringing my cell phone down there as well so feel free to call me, but don't expect me to answer during the day. Leave me a voice mail and I'll call you sometime in the evening when I'm off duty and I'll let you know how I'm doing.

Wish me luck everyone, and I'll be talking to you all soon. Expect pictures of me in my uniform with my Airborne wings when I get back...I'll have to show off this great accomplishment.

As I'll be saying all too much for the next few weeks: HOOAH!
