I opened the front door, afraid of finding my father waiting for me at the other end of the door. I sighed in relieve when I saw that my father was nowhere to be seen in the hallway. In stead I found my mother waiting for me. When I saw my mother I instantly knew that my mother had seen us together.

My mother mentioned to me to follow her. I nodded and walked behind her. I noticed that we were heading to the library. My mom would only go there when she wanted to be alone or talk about something that no one else was supposed to hear.

I smiled when she went to sit at the window, then I noticed that when she sat in that chair she had a perfect view of what happened at the street in front of their house. I quickly glanced at my mother, afraid of what was going to happen.

‘’Sit down, Jared.’’ I quickly did what she told me to do. I sat across from her, choosing to stare out of the window instead of looking at my mother. When mother didn’t say anything, I decided to ask a question myself. ‘’So what did you want to talk about, mother?’’ I ask, knowing my mother would answer.

‘’Who was that boy, Jared?’’ She asked in stead of answering my question. I sighed; I couldn’t lie to my mother, so I had to tell the truth. ‘’His name is Menno.’’ I answered honestly.

‘’Where did you meet him?’’ I looked at my mother; it seemed she wouldn’t let me get away with this. I sighed, it was time to explain everything to my mother, otherwise she would continue with these questions. ‘’I met him at school. Two days ago a group of boys was at our school, after school that day I wanted to go home when I found out that Mark was in a fight with the same group. That was when I met him. I wanted to stop Mark, but he started laughing at me. Menno stood up for me.’’ I finish, not looking at my mother but outside.

‘’He was also the reason I wanted to go out last night.’’ I continued, now my mother knew what had happened. Well, not everything but most of it. She didn’t need to know that I liked him and that we had already kissed. I almost blushed, when I remembered our last kiss.

After moments of silence I looked at my mother. She was watching me silently. ‘’I know there is more to the story then you have told me, but for now that’s okay.’’ I smiled, it seemed I couldn’t hide anything for my mother, she always knew when I was lying or hiding something from her.

‘’You like him, don’t you?’’ I blush at the question and look down. Then I remember what Menno had said and quickly looked up again. ‘’Yes, I do and I think he likes me too.’’ I answer honestly.

After a while, my mother smiles. I sigh relieved that my mother didn’t yell at me or something. ‘’So you have finally found someone you like, didn’t you?’’ I just nod at her.

‘’That’s good for you. I’m so happy for you, Jared.’’ Suddenly I was hugged by my mother. She lets me go after a while and sits down again.

Then I suddenly remember something, if my mother really supported me in this then she had to know this. ‘’Mother, there is something else that you need to know. Menno is from the other school. Also Mark said that when he sees us together one more time, he is going to tell father about it.’’ I explain to her. I need her help with this.

‘’Jared, you know what your father will do if he finds out about this, don’t you?’’ My mother says, looking concerned. I nod, ‘’ I know, it’s going to be hell if he finds out. Then I won’t be able to see Menno anymore. I don’t think I can manage that.’’ I sigh, before running a hand through my hair. I always do that when I don’t know what to do.

‘’I know it sounds strange, mother, but it’s the truth.’’ I continue, resting my head against the back of the chair and closing my eyes. Then I feel a hand on top of my knee, I open my eyes to see my mother looking outside.

‘’We need to think of something. He can’t find out. I’m so happy that you have finally found someone, Jared. It is time for your father to let you go more. But I’m afraid that your father won’t be convinced that easily. Also when Mark tells your father about you and Menno, then it will only be worse.’’ My mother says, looking back at me.

I sigh, ‘’I know, mother. I’m just afraid to tell him. You know how he is. He has already planned my whole life since the day I was born.’’ I see my mother nod; it seems she was thinking again. I just hoped she would come up with something that will work out.

‘’Let me think about this for some time, Jared. For now I will help you to meet Menno every night. You have to know that you can’t be seen together, especially not by Mark. But I think you know that.’’ She finishes. It seems I am not alone in all this. It’s good to know that my mother stands with me in this.

‘’Thank you, mother. I really appreciate you doing this for me.’’ I smile as I stand up. ‘’I have to see father, else he will wonder why I am so late.’’ She nodded, also standing up.

‘’I will go with you.’’ Together we walk to my father’s office. I knock, knowing my father doesn’t really want to be disturbed when he is working. ‘’Come in.’’ I open the door for my mother and follow her inside.

‘’Why are you so late, Jared? You were supposed to be home half an hour ago.’’ I shiver at the sound of his voice. He was angry and that was not a good thing. Before I can answer my father, my mother speaks. ‘’When he came home I had a little talk with him. So don’t get angry at him for being late. He was home on time, like always.’’

I silently thank my mother for helping me out. I looked at my father, noticing that he wasn’t angry anymore. I sighed; sometimes I really wondered how my mother did that. His mood could change in seconds because for something my mother said or did.

‘’So, how was your day at school?’’ Father asked setting aside some papers he was working on. ‘’Nothing special happened, just a normal day. Mark was a little annoying but that is nothing unusual.’’ I finish. Maybe if I put Mark in a bad spotlight my father wouldn’t believe him that fast anymore.

It seemed my mother understood what I was trying to do when she gave a short nod. I watched my father, waiting for a reaction. ‘’What do you mean annoying?’’ My father asked after a short moment.

I shrugged; I needed to play this right. ‘’Well, he is very irritating and distracts me under class. Sometimes I have the feeling he is stalking me or something.’’ I answer, trying to sound annoying and convincing. Judging from the reaction from my father I see it worked.

‘’Then maybe I need to talk to his father about it. I don’t like it if he is making you feel like that. Certainly, if school is concerned.’’ As he finishes I nod, showing him that I agree with him. I did agree, but I just want Mark totally off my back. I just had to be patient.

He dismisses us and I go to my room, planning to do some homework. Then I began to wonder, Menno and I hadn’t agreed to meet tonight. So, did I have to wait for tomorrow night or not? I sighed, I just had to wait and see, didn’t I?

Luckily, if we would meet tonight, I could be sure that I had my mother behind me. I continued with my boring homework, when a sudden knock on my door shook me out of it. I stood up and opened the door. It was my mother. I frowned when she pushed me back inside and quickly closed the door.

Then I noticed she had a phone in her hand. She was still talking on the phone with someone when she mentioned for me to sit down again. It seemed she was enjoying herself. I wondered who it was and why mother came to my bedroom.

Suddenly the phone was handed to me. ‘’Who is it?’’ I ask her, curious to know who would want to talk to me. She just smiled and pressed the phone in my hand. ‘’Don’t take too long.’’ She said before walking out on the balcony, giving me privacy.

‘’Hello?’’ I said hesitantly. I hear a chuckle before a voice greets me. ‘’Hello, Jared.’’ I think my heart missed a beat when I recognized Menno’s voice. I quickly look at my mother, only to see her smiling at me. ‘’Hey, wait, I didn’t give you my number right?’’ I ask. I hadn’t given him my phone number, had I? Another chuckle. ‘’No, you didn’t. I searched for it and it wasn’t that hard to find.’’ I smile, that was probably true.

‘’So, why are you calling? You know if my father had picked up, you would be in great trouble, right?’’ I say, sitting down on my bed with my back against the wall, getting comfortable.

He laughs, ‘’Yeah, I know, but I just had to take that risk. I talked to your mother. She is a lovely woman.’’ I laugh its weird hearing that from Menno. I nod and then realize that he can’t see me. ‘’I know that. She is my mother after all. So what did you talk about with her?’’ I ask, curious to know what they had been talking about.

‘’Just that she will help us meet every night, so that we aren’t found out by your father.’’ He finishes, I can sense he is smiling by now. ‘’Yeah, I know. Mother and I already discussed it after I came home. She had seen us together.’’ I say, the hope building up that we could meet tonight and if not tomorrow night. I really wanted to see him.

It was silent for a while before he answered. ‘’That is what she told me too. You know what that means, right?’’ I can’t help but laugh. ‘’Of course I know what that means. So when can we meet?’’ I carefully ask. I really wanted to see him tonight but I also understood if we had to wait for tomorrow.

‘’Are you free tonight?’’ He asks. I smile, ‘’Yeah, you?’’ I ask, already knowing his answer to that question. ‘’Of course, otherwise I wouldn’t be asking you out for tonight, would I?’’

‘’That’s true. So when do we meet?’’ I ask, I was already looking forward to seeing him. ‘’I think it’s wise to meet when it’s dark. Then it’s easier for you to sneak out. So I think around eight p.m., is that okay?’’ I look at my mother; she was still outside, looking at the garden. I needed to know if it was okay for her.

‘’Jared? You still there?’’ I run my hand though my hair before answering. ‘’Yeah, I just have to make sure that my mother is okay with it.’’

‘’Don’t worry about that. I already asked your mother about that. She is alright with it.’’ He quickly says. I sigh, ‘’Okay, then I will see you around eight.’’ It’s silent for some time.

‘’Good, I will wait for you.’’ I smile; I already had an idea where he would be waiting for me. Before I can say anything he continues. ‘’Jared, I know that it’s maybe weird for me to say this, but I miss you.’’

This time I really couldn’t help but smile as I leaned my head backwards against the wall, my eyes closed. ‘’It’s not weird. I miss you too.’’ I tell him softly, already embarrassed. We talk some more before saying goodbye for the moment. He wouldn’t tell me what we were going to do, but he was sure that I would enjoy it. I couldn’t wait.

As I hung up, my mother came back into my room. She looked at me with a soft smile on her face. ‘’So are you going to meet him tonight?’’ I nod and smile. ‘’ I can’t wait till tonight to see him.’’

She shakes her head. ‘’I kind of figured that out already when I saw you on the phone with him.’’ I can’t help but blush, it’s weird to talk about this with my mother. She takes the phone from me and goes to the door. Before she walks out she turns around. ‘’Know that I want to meet this young boy soon, Jared. He seems a nice and honest person.’’ Then she is gone.

I smile and shake my head. It seems my mother just approved of Menno. I look at the clock to see that I still have three more hours before I meet him. I decide to do some more homework and to get ready for dinner. I was looking forward to what he had in mind for us.
