January 2009, I suddenly developed an allergy to deodorant. Not just my brand, but all deodorants. It was probably the aluminum, but neither my family doc nor the dermatologist could say for sure. Since then, I embarked on an odyssey of natural deodorant trials. I still have not found anything satisfactory in covering up or preventing smell and so my search continues. However, for anyone else out there with this problem, I document my trials for you.
1. Arm & Hammer Essentials: So far, this has worked the best, but requires several applications through the day. It does not prevent odor 100%, but at least it minimizes it to a tolerable level. And by tolerable, I mean people in a 10 ft radius don't keel over and die if I lift my arm.
2. Herbal Clear Naturally! : This one totally sucks. It makes my arm pits all sticky and does nothing for odor.
3. Tom's of Maine: This one was ok. I liked the scent, but after a while it turned the skin of my arm pits dark and started to burn the skin. I have read on other websites that this brand was recently purchased by one of the big companies (Colgate, maybe?) and they changed the formula. Don't know if that's true, but maybe so. Either way, I've heard it works great for some, and for some it is like me with burning and discoloration, and some report peeling skin too.
Next up, distilled white vinegar. I've heard from both friends and online sources that this works quite well to kill odor and the vinegar scent evaporates after a few minutes. Some spray it on, some wipe it on with cotton pads or swabs. We'll see how it works!
EDIT:
It is important to note that vinegar stings irritated areas! Oops and ouch! I didn't know they were there until too late!
