Thank God
My friend who works for Amnesty has finally come through. She got into the office right before it happened. Ooof.
My thoughts are with all the people who have been hurt, killed, or deprived of their loved ones.
Some words from my friend:
"I can see in this calm that there is a sort of inner strength in the British, a stoicism and willingness to go on doing what they have felt was the right thing to do all along. The jokes about keeping a stiff upper lip make light of a real and deep-seated gravity that will carry these people through-as it has carried them through threats from the Irish Republican Army and the legal “state of emergency” that the government has declared since September of 2001. My friend Ruma said to me, pretty brown eyes widened and staring worriedly into the middle distance, that London has been a ticking bomb since September 11th, and it was only a matter of time until something like this happened… but back at the office, those few who did not attend the service continue their work..."
