Due to Wufei’s wife’s, Meiran, death indirectly under the orders of Treize Khushrenada, Wufei became focused on revenge. He took up Meiran’s ideal of fighting for justice. During the series, he was prone to fight on his own unless he felt there was no other choice or he was ordered to join forces with the other Gundam pilots. Because he was unable to protect the one person who mattered most, who happened to be a woman, Wufei felt people who were weak should not fight. This translated into whenever he came across a female fighter, he went out of his way to insult them and tell them to stop fighting because they were weak; therefore needed protection.
When he failed to win the duel with Treize, he fell into a deep depression, considering himself weak and unworthy of fighting with the Nataku-the renamed gundam Shenlong.
He admired strength, even if it was just in the way a bird flapped its wings, or some other form of nature. The thing with Wufei’s temper was that whenever he was irritated or infuriated, his fighting style tended to grow sloppy and disorganized.
He is a fierce defender of honor and his people. So, when his colony chose to self-detonate rather than allow themselves to be used against him, his grief grew exponentially. Throughout the series, he wore white to signify his grieving period. Even in Episode Zero, he wore white mourning clothes, which continued. He grieved for Meiran, then the rest of his clan and colony.
In short, he’s stubborn, passionate about his interests, and prefers his own company over others. By the end of the series, his obsession with justice remains his driving force behind fighting, though after Treize tricked him into striking the killing blow and avenging Meiran’s death messed with his mind as he considered the trickery honorless.
This deception was probably what made Wufei drift after the war, looking for a way to atone for the loss of honor. When Mariemaia’s Rebellion came around a year later, Wufei was one of her soldiers. This display of dedication to a former enemy, Treize (who was Mariemaia’s father), shows how he cannot just accept loosing honor, even if he gave Treize an honourable death.
Through a fight with Heero, who had found peace where Wufei could not, Wufei finally allowed himself to let Treize and Meiran’s memory rest.
Preventers Five has Wufei comfortable in his position as an agent under Une’s command; his ability to accept orders from former enemies is again shown.
The really ironic thing about Wufei is that if he’d been left to his own devices, no war, he would simply devote his time to learning and training. Due to being the head of his clan, despite being among the last (if not the last) from his colony, he feels his last duty is to have children. Without Preventers, Wufei would likely seek to continue his studies. He would also likely look for work in a bookstore with the idea to own his own at some point.
