went to see the tempest

anddddd it was not as stank as it could have been. it had that actress i don't like in it-- she reminds me of kini. she has like three ways of acting (this chick, not kini), and each of them is in some way "sexy." i'm serious, i've never seen her deliver a line where she's not grabbing at body parts suggestively or licking someone's face or moaning in pleasure/pain. and she's always frowning.

it had gospel music in it, which i thought was weird. i know gospel can be moving, but it seems like a shortcut/substitute for real meaning and emotion. i don't know where i draw the this-is-inappropriate-appropriation line, but the entire cast of spirits/singers was white white white... so it didn't have any cool reclaim-the-shit elements. prospero was a woman, though (and i think she's also magenta).

it also had poofy firework explosions and characters climbing all up in the audience. you know how much i love that shit, where i get to be part of the experience and people exploit african-american culture and real fire happens on stage and folks crawl on me and get in my way while they're yelling in bad accents down at the stage.

also the costumes were random. somebody somewhere thought the shit was innovative, too, you can tell. seriously, a third of the characters looked like renfair asian stereotypes with clown makeup (the chorus-- which added another weirdness to the gospel singing), a third had on cheap fashion bug suits and dollar store tiaras (the girls) or khakis and a button sweater (the boys), and the rest looked "period" ("""") plus clown makeup (caliban, prospero, trunculo or whoever). oh wait, and miranda. who was wearing a flour sack and had on approximately no makeup. okay, and i lied about caliban-- he looked like jar jar binks crossed with disney's tarzan. he did do some neat cartwheels and shit.
