“Stop breathing,” he said, staring forward through the windscreen of the Volvo. I looked at him, shocked.
“You’re steaming the windows up” he turned to me and gave me that dazzling side-grin. I exhaled heavily and gave him a dry smile.
“I nearly did there for a moment” I said, “ I thought you would have stopped saying things like that now”
“Why?” He looked generally confused.
“Because you know I’d do anything you told me to do” I muttered, staring at my mitten-clad hands in my lap.
“I wish you wouldn’t sometimes” His face was stern now, his eyes searching mine, as he caught me in one of our never-ending glances.
A moment passed before I could think of anything to say.
“First you want me to do as you say; and now you don’t. I can never make you happy” This made his flawless face fall.
“Every moment I think of you, every moment I see you, every moment I’m with you; I’m happy. Don’t you know that?”
“Yes” I said feebly. I looked down at my hands again. I couldn’t help it. His perfect being still invaded my thinking every time I looked at him. “But you never show it. How I wish you’d show it. I love it when you smile”
A cold finger reached under my chin and pulled my face up to his. He pressed his lips to mine silently, but I could feel his smile along with his uneven breathing.
“I thought, because you knew the way I felt, I wouldn’t have to show it all the time. You are the only thing that matter to me anymore! His breath tickled my face.
“I still like little reminders at times though.”
“Then you will have those little reminders, as much as you wish” he whispered into my ear, just before gently kissing a pathway down my neck. How I wish I had worn a strapless top, despite the freezing cold December night.
That’s when the fireworks started. The first of many brightly coloured sirens shot up into the wide, starless black sky and exploded into a thousand tiny bubals of electricity. Before I knew it, Edward was out of the car and opening the passenger door for me. I gladly took his outstretched hand, and within a second I was in his arms. He slammed the door to the Volvo with his foot and carried me to a ready laid blanket on the grass. He placed me down gently and sat by my side. We sat there for a moment in silence until he eventually snaked an arm around my waist and pulled me back until we were lying side by side on the soft blanket.
The fireworks seemed to go on for hours. Though the colours and display impressed me, nothing seemed to be quite as extravagant anymore, not since I’d known Edward.
“What are you thinking about?” he asked, gazing at my face, though I’m not sure he could see much because of the lack of light.
“Nothing… much.” I replied with a sheepish grin on my face.
“Won’t you tell me?” He pleaded. “Please?”
“Maybe later” I said, finding this quite funny.
“Urgh, you torture me sometimes, you know that?”
“There’s a lot of worse ways I could torture you” I said, manoeuvring myself so my head was on his stomach. He smiled his usual half-smile and lay back.
We lay like that for at least an hour, not moving an inch. Even after the fireworks had long finished, neither of us budged. Edward was the first to movie though, effortlessly lifting my body and repositioning himself so he was lying by my side.
“I love you” he whispered into my ear.
“I love you too” I murmured, struggling once again to hold onto my thoughts.
His face was so close, it seemed natural to just lean in and kiss him, but I didn’t want to ruin the moment, it was too perfect. He chucked, realising my thoughts, and tenderly pressed his lips to mine.
Suddenly, a gently tune started playing in the background, that I recognised as ‘Clair de Lune’ . It was coming from the Volvo. He must have put the CD player on timer or something.
The evening was faultless, and I cursed my human ways as my eyes started to feel heavy. I yawned heavily and realising this, Edward took my into his arms and lay back. Though his chest was hard and cool, it seemed to comfort me instantly.
“Sleep, my love, sleep” he whispered and placed a light kiss on the top of my head. As he said this, the music changed, and I immediately distinguished it as my lullaby. I reluctantly closed my eyes and quickly fell into a deep sleep; the kind I only get when I’m with Edward. I dreamt of his as usual, no change there.
When I opened my eyes, the sun was just rising and I could hear the birds chirping merrily. I reached about my head for Edward, but he wasn’t there. Panic rose in my chest as I scrambled to sit up straight. The blanket was now wrapped around me, and he was sitting on the grass at my toes, He smiled and reached down for my foot. Softly, he kissed each one of my freezing toes. His lips sent sparks through my veins, warming me thoroughly.
“Good morning” He said, cheerfully.
