On gender issues & reading

Aug 18, 2011 19:45

"In our culture 'stories about men... function as stories about all people', so 'women learn at an early age to identify with male heroes' [...] Many men lack this experience of reading across gender lines." (Regis, A Natural History of the Romance Novel).

Oh, so true.

It is))... Besides, even women in adventurous stories look more like men according to their character...

Women in fiction written by men seem to often bear semblance to men due to the exactly same reason: men's limited ability to assume female roles. There are indeed very few female characters created by men that come across as convincing.

Apparently, by building largely patriarchal societies men are in, a way, putting themselves at a social disadvantage, cause they lack women's ability to adapt. In many ways.
