Automotive X Prize

In the same way that the first X Prize helped launch manned spaceflight, the *automotive* X prize is designed to encourage the development of cars that get over 100mpg.

The rules are very complex, but I saw a talk tonight by a guy who has basically read all the rules and investigated all the entrants.  The design ideas range from clever to wacky.  ( Read more... )

I'm pretty sure reshaping didn't get him all the way to 100. He also drives like a crazy person.

Still, small light cars with the right shape will get great has milage. And horrible crashes with SUVs. Boo

That's true, though presumably some of the same modifications could be applied toward larger vehicles as well. However, these probably would help large delivery vans and SUVs more than, say, sports cars, where a lot of efficiency is lost due to the large engine.
