hands on @ VA

Aug 08, 2008 20:47

well, finally my instructor got clearance at the VA (Veteran affairs) Menlo park, where my clinical site is..

so we cud actually have hands on patient/resident care , supervised by a CNA or nurse of course.

so..lets see.. i got to shave a male resident. kinda scary cuz he cusses alot, when he talks..

i dont kno his diagnoses. im not assigned to him. he cussed at my classmate tho which was funny, cuz shes annoyin. act like she knows everythin..but she be gettin below 75s on her tests...shoot..

anyways..
uhmm..got to wash and help out in a shower.
patient was confined to a chair, and heavy guy, so they used a lift in tansferring him.
he was at risk for MRSA. so we had to gown up and wear gloves..
contact precautions..
he had a BM (bowel movement) during the shower...had to face the shower head toward his ass..heh.
overall , he was a good patient. no problems or resisting.

uhm.next i got to feed a patient. i thot he was sleepin, but my instructor pushed me to feed him. he wasnt. he kept his eyes closed the whole time. ate mostly everythin.
then he kinda hit me..heh.not hard.so i stopped.and he mentioned he had to go bathroom.
he wears an adult diaper so the CNA's were changin the diaper, but he started havin a BM during the change. kinda unpleasant, but hey gotta deal with it. so after he was done, he got cleaned up, and ready 2 go.
then i again observed another change..
so that was like 3 BM's observed 2day...heh.

uhmm. made some beds. if i wasnt shadowin or helpin out. prolly lookin at my residents charts and fillin out our worksheets..yup we got homework.

overall it was a cool day. good thin i didnt stay in my unit alot, cuz they are mostly independent in their ADL's (activities of daily living), so yah went to another unit to watch and help out.

uhm..yup. wonder wat i'll get to do next week..
