As a matter of fact, Germans have at least three different kinds of sour cream. Schmand is really fat and dense, saure Sahne is good regular sour cream, and creme fraiche is very tender with low acidity. Regarding shchi, the only problem would be to find a sour component; genuine shchi require either Russian sauerkraut, or sour apples, or sorrel, or something like that.

Try Matiesherring. In a place like Nordsee a portion should cost 5-6 bucks. It is very typical of this area.

Curiously, when am in Germany, what I always find bizarre is German aversion to tap water. I have been drinking tap water all my life, either in Moscow or in the U.S. Here in the States the first thing they serve you in a restaurant is a glass of icy tap water. In Germany, I always have to make a scandal to force a waiter to bring me "Leitungswasser"...

The last piece of advice: try sausages from street stands. They are always excellent, no comparison to ground cooked paper that they in Russia or in America. And to drink, when you get tired of beer, ask for Apfelschorle.
