One last post for the day - old brokeback art

Sorry for the spam! It looks like I'm trying to make up for those months of not posting, doesn't it?

Here's some pen and ink Brokeback art I did this summer, as an illustration for Jennasts' Somebody New fanfic, so that it could be incorporated in the fanzine she made. She then asked me for a month of exclusivity, which has now passed. More particularly, it's an illustration for Chapter 15, Just One Night. I love this fanfic. It takes place after the film timeline, in a universe where everything happened the same way except that Jack didn't die. The characters are adults, each of them dealing with the problems of their situations, but still fighting to make it better. It's realistic, rough, passionate, well written with a sense of story telling that's incredible.

I'm half happy with the illustration - I had to make it black and white, and of course went for the hard way, choosing pen and ink over pencil. I'm not very experienced in that medium, and chose it so that I could use that wonderful box of Rotring micron pens we had just discovered at my parents' house. As for the result... I'm glad that I managed to daw characters from a movie fandom with a reasonable amount of resemblance - well, I hope I did. Now, for the inking... Obviously, I didn't differenciate the plans enough, and if feels more crowded than really rich, I think. Though I tried to be patient, I wasn't meticulous enough in the crosshatching and wasn't bold enough with the darker shadows. And there's sloppy perspective all around. Oh, and I should definitely have erased the pencil and made some details better before sending it! Alas, I was in a hurry then, and as usual I'm having difficulties going back to a drawing I thought I had finished.

But still... I'm glad I made this. I had a lot of fun researching western saloons, Corona and Resistol hats, and still more fun drawing the details. I feel it works with the story and the scene (though I realised afterward that Ennis should be stitting at that moment...). And I was very proud to be included in Jennasts' zine!

Here's the preview:

Stampede Saloon

The version you're seeing here is cropped compared to the zine one. Jennasts preferred the full version, because of all the Saloon details and the atmosphere - but I think I prefer it like this, with more attention given to the characters. If you want to see the full version, it's here.

Here's a detail of the characters, because the resemblance works better on uncompressed files of big images, I think.! Sorry for the size...

And here's a link to the pencil lineart stage if you're curious.

Hope you liked!
