Most of the time I walk around college (which is really university now but somehow none of us think it's enough of a bother to correct each other) with an automaton lecture-sleep-tutorial-sleep-lecture and so on with breaks for food in between.

Then there are some days when there are talks like...

"Silent Runs around the Sapphic Bush: Exploring the Sexuality of Young Women Who Love Women in Malaysia" (Well, we never *had* a talk like that because it's actually a book but the author bunged over for a chat)

...and I feel this fierce pride that I'm in Monash U because when will you ever see talks with the likes of that held in local universities.

Last Friday was Empowering Virtual Spaces (or fancy speak for 'Internet') for woman and gender rights and exposing sexuality online.

This being idealism talking, I can't help thinking At last I'm doing something to stick it to the man!. The way sticking-it goes, it's not much but this part of university I like, where you don't feel held-down and spoonfed theoretical nonsense For Maintaining The Good of The Country.

Naturally, the dad in not so many words, thinks I should not get used to this since working life will be hell on the ideals when the time comes, with all the political bitching and head-stepping to get to your job.

I'd tell him he doesn't really have to worry but he won't believe me.

Despite the sensationalism to market the talk (Look! The Guest Speaker Wrote Books about Women-lovin. Aren't you curious to find out who she is?) the tiny room was barely crowded and the ones who were there were either lecturers or students whom the lecturers arm-twisted into going.

Not forgetting those who went because free food was offered.

Idealism is going to be hard but it does have a chance, even if people have to be seduced by promises of free food.

Maybe awareness will seep in through osmosis.

It has done spectacular things enough.
