Baki: Cropping tutorial

Sep 15, 2006 15:42

Here's a tutorial I use to crop my icons. ^^

Mostly for Photoshop, but I believe it's pretty translatable...
If you know how to resize, copy and paste in Phototshop, just skip down a few steps.
If not, I go though the process step-by-step! ^^

Okay, so first I'm going to open (File > Open) this nice Pita-Ten image as my icon base.

Now I'm going to resize the image so it'd be enough to fit the 100x100 workspace. I go to Image > Image Size to find the resizing tool.

Make sure that you have the Contstrain Porportions and Resample image: bicubic options checked, or else your resized image will look very pixelated.
Start by putting the Width and Height settings at 50%. That's the best place to start.

Okay, so we now have the image at 50%. Now go back to the resize tool again (Image > Image Size) and keep adding in either 80% or 90% until you get it the size you want.

I've gotten the image to a size that I really like. Now let's being the cropping!

In order to crop the image we have to copy it. And to copy the image we need to outline it first.
For those who don't know how, you can use the retangular marquee tool. It looks like this:
. Then you just drag the dotted lines around the image.

Or for those you enjoy shortcuts, you can just hit Ctrl A and it's nicely outlined. Or you can right-click the image and choose Select All

Now we have your nicely outlined image. Hit Ctrl C to copy your image.

Now open up a new image (File > New) and make sure you have the dimensions set at 100x100 and the resolution set somewhere between 72-75. Why? Just because it's the image standard. I don't think you'd want some pixelated-looking icons.

Go to your new image and hit Ctrl V to paste your resized image. Yes I know, you're seeing the corner. I'll now show you what you came here for!

Look for the Move Tool It looks like this:
.

Your image should appear to have this dotted outline on it. You can now use your mouse to drag the image in any postion you'd like. Or you can use your arrow keys to get it to exact porportions. ^^

Keep dragging the image until you get it to the position.

Congrats! You're done! You can either begin customizing the image or you can save it.

I hope this tutorial was helpful. If you have any questions or comments, please comment. I'd be happy to read them ^^
