Title: Crime and Punishment
Pairing: None, they're only 11
Summary: The first year Gryffindors are split in two camps. James and Sirius go on disliking each other and Remus is bewildered as to how he ended up Sirius' best friend.
Disclaimer: I didn't make them up. I wish I did but I didn't. I do get to play with them sometimes though, and I say 'play' because I don't get any money out of it so it cannot in any way be described as 'work'.
Warnings: None, unless you have some grand objection to eleven year olds yelling at each other.
It's sort of a sequel to a silly little drabbley thing I wrote where Remus meets Sirius and James for the very first time.

Even as they waited to be sorted James and Sirius kept on glaring and sniping at each other. Their ending up in the same house did little to detract from their mutual animosity. The battle lines were drawn and the Gryffindor first year dormitory was split in the middle with Sirius and Remus on one side and James and Peter on the other. Poor Frank had to act as the neutral zone, never taking anyone's side and keeping his temper in the midst of many an argument.

Remus was never quite sure how or why the lines had been drawn as they had. Perhaps if Sirius and he hadn't been sorted before Peter and James, Sirius wouldn't have sat next to him. Then Remus wouldn't have been the one to push Sirius to the side as Bellatrix tried to jinx him and they wouldn't have become friends.

As it was Remus Lupin was Sirius Black's best friend for all of nine months. For nine months Sirius and Remus were inseparable. It was the first time in his life Remus that had a best friend. He'd had friends before, boys from the village he could play with but he'd always been too worried that they would figure out what was wrong with him so he could never really relax. Sirius was different. It was practically impossible for a person to stay tense when Sirius was grinning at them all excited about something. Sirius even accepted his excuse for disappearing once a month. Mothers were important, he agreed, and if Remus's mother was ill and needed help every once in a while, Remus was right to go home and help her.

Of course, all that changed after the Andromeda Incident.

Andromeda was the second most important person in Sirius's life, right after his mother. Andromeda was a sixth-year Ravenclaw and Sirius thought she was smarter than anyone, ever. More importantly, she was the only other Black not to be sorted in Slytherin. She was the one who comforted Sirius when Mrs Black sent him a howler for getting sorted into Gryffindor.

"We're more Black than the rest of them, little cousin," she had said firmly, "The family wasn't always Slytherin you know, it's just a load of bollocks our grandfather made up to keep his children in line. Blacks are supposed to be independent and do whatever the hell they want. Our parents and my sisters are nothing but sheep following in grandfather's footsteps like faithful little servants."

The only time a rift appeared between the two cousins was in March of their first year, when Andromeda started dating a fellow-Ravenclaw. Sirius seemed upset at the new relationship. Remus was sure that it was because he was jealous that someone else was taking up Andromeda's time. He couldn't imagine that Sirius would disapprove of anyone that made Andy smile like that but when he said that Sirius looked at him coldly and said that Remus couldn't understand.

On the day of the Incident, Remus and Sirius were at the library sitting two tables away from Andromeda trying to understand transfiguration. Sirius was brilliant at the practicals and Remus was very good in the theory but put the two together and they both got completely lost. Sirius's concentration was destroyed the moment his cousin walked in, saw him and ostentatiously kissed her new boyfriend goodbye. Ted left and Sirius watched Andromeda instead of studying.

Sirius was too busy looking at his cousin and Remus was too busy trying to get Sirius to concentrate so neither of them saw the enemy until it was too late. A jet of red hit Andromeda in the back and she slumped on the desk.

By the time Sirius and Remus got up to see what had happened, James Potter had jumped the assailant and was pounding on him as hard as he could. Sirius and Remus joined the fray and when Professor Underton came to investigate he found the three of them sitting on Roddy Lestrange, holding him down. James was on his thighs holding his feet down with his hands, Sirius was on the guy's back, kneeling on his forearms and Remus was settled on his nape with a firm hold on his ears.

After that incident things changed. For one thing Sirius was firmly on Andromeda's side again. The Gryffindor table never saw so many howlers before or since, as one after one the Black relatives expressed their disappointment in him. Lestrange got two months detention for his stunt and finally got Bellatrix to go out with him. James Potter and Sirius Black were now good friends and the three of them had received enough points to make up for the daily howlers.

Remus was the only one who came out the loser. From one day to the next he was relegated from best friend to sidekick.

He never did figure out why he was the one who got punished when Rodolfus was the one caught breaking the rules.
