CHAPTER 2

At first Siwan was grateful somebody as outgoing as Kwanghee had found him and showed him around when he was still too confused about everything.
Gradually, when Kwanghee turned out to be the most annoying person alive, his gratefulness became amusement, then terror, eventually settling to indifference.
But he was quite happy with Kwanghee’s presence despite its drawbacks. As a new student, he felt like a one person freakshow for the entire school and he shared it with Kwanghee when they were both sitting on the bench in front of the school yard. Kwanghee came up with the most random, silliest counter-story for that.

- When I was a kid, I used to cover my head with a blanket thinking that if I couldn't see them, they couldn't see me neither.

- And how did it work for you? - Siwan asked in an exasperated voice. It wasn’t really Kwanghee’s fault that the other students’ stares had been following him all day long. But he had to take it out on someone and it happened to be Kwanghee.

- Well, try guessing - Kwanghee answered, unaffected.

- Was it supposed to comfort me?

The taller boy shrugged.

- In the end, I was always found… but for a few seconds, it helped. Sometimes you just need a few seconds and everything will be allr… - Kwanghee’s voice trailed off, as he probably thought of something.

The whole scene was so unlike Kwanghee Siwan couldn’t think of any witty answer. At least not until he felt Kwanghee’s hands on his face, anyway. Then he tried to jerk away, but Kwanghee held him firmly.

Siwan saw nothing but darkness.

- How is it?

- Your hands are sticky, gross - Siwan blurted out, but he didn’t really want him to take his hands back.

It did help him after all.

Siwan had no idea why he thought of this weird conversation with Kwanghee when he followed Heechul down the street.

Not seeing anyone. Not being seen. Not being able to see. That made Siwan wonder about something, but the gang member accompanying him didn’t even bother to look at him, swinging his bag nonchalantly as he walked. This was a bit too much for Siwan. He wasn’t the one to be ignored after all.

- Aren’t you going to blindfold me? - he asked, partly joking, partly curious if he’d really have to do that.

That finally grabbed Heechul’s attention.

- I’d love to, but no. But if you want to, we can think of something when we’re free later…?
In this exact moment Siwan thought it would be better if he kept his mouth shut for the rest of their walk. Heechul, apparently satisfied with the innuendo, put on a smug smile that never left his lips.

As they reached what he supposed was the gang’s hideout, Siwan received another shock. He expected some dark, abandoned factory with ominous broken windows to say the least.
Instead, he was led to a ordinary looking apartment, with garden and stone fence and even a dog which tried to eat them alive when they entered the property.

- Feel yourself at home. Junyoung should be there in a few… - Heechul said and vanished,
guessing by the direction he took, most probably in the kitchen.

Siwan had no idea whose house it was, but he didn’t think about it too much, busy with finding a way to some kind of living room. When he found it, he stopped in his tracks, perplexed.
Nobody had even noticed him, standing in the doorway with his mouth slightly open.
Guys he knew and didn’t know from school occupied every empty space available, some of them flipping through the books and magazines they found there, some playing a Wii game on huge TV screen attached on the wall. They were playing Final Fantasy, for fuck’s sake.
And here he was thinking he was joining some badass gang. At least more badass than Chulsoo’s gang.

But then another unexpected thing happened. One of the guys - definitely the youngest of them all - stormed into the room, shouting:

- Mum’s coming, we better go back, guys!

- Junyoung hyung said that since we have a new fish it’s better to stay away from… - a giant playing the Wii answered, looking more regretful about leaving the game than actually worrying about the newcomer.

- I don’t care, MY MUM is coming, ok? Everybody, MOVE your asses.

And so Siwan was forced out of the house without any further warning. Once again he was told to follow Heechul.

- Blindfolding you wouldn’t be such a bad idea now - Heechul admitted with a smirk. - You shouldn’t know where our secret base is.

But he didn’t blindfold Siwan, which he welcomed with a small sigh of relief. Heechul unconcerned attitude was fascinating and it bugged the hell out of him at the same time though.
After a few minutes, they stood in front of… dark, abandoned factory with ominous broken windows. Well, wasn’t that ironic.

The walls inside were sprayed with words of various degree of profanity.
The guys that were in Dongjun’s - Siwan realized he suddenly remembered his name - house weren’t here yet, Heechul must have taken some shortcut. But even so, about three times more gang members gathered already, making Siwan wonder how many members exactly Junyoung’s gang had.
The scene was very different from the one Siwan saw previously too; people playing cards or shooting darts, everything much more suspicious, gloomy, curses flying around.
Now it looked more like a badass gang he had in his mind when he decided to join their ranks.
Somebody told him to sit down and wait for Junyoung and he felt a pang of uneasiness, his palms beginning to sweat.

He even asked Kwanghee once or twice about Junyoung, but Kwanghee’s answer was somewhat non-committal. Siwan never talked to Junyoung, but he seemed like a cool guy - the one that actually asks questions first, shoots later. And only if necessary.
That was one of the reasons he chose him over Chulsoo. The other leader was more of an uncivilized type.

Finally, the group that stayed behind swarmed through the destroyed door. Siwan rose to his feet when he noticed Junyoung, talking to somebody who was blocked from Siwan’s view.
He almost started introducing himself with a respectable nod (he didn’t want to look too eager, yet good first impression was important).

But then his eyes registered the other person standing behind the leader and he forgot about first impressions and nods.

It was Hwang Kwanghee.
