PART 1: My History and Needs.

I'm horrid at making decisions... and now that I have to think about getting a new computer relatively soonish, it's hurting my brain. Tried asking at work. I get different solutions. Of course Jon wants me to get a Mac (but that's mutual), Adam says Laptop, and I'm sure somebody else will have a different answer ( Read more... )

Okay, I've pondered your options, and here's what I've got.

I think that the Apple is the better choice for you. Really, the only thing that a Mac can't do that you want it to do is play specific PC games, and that's something that we can fix - I've a program or two that would allow you to run PC games well. And besides, the only thing I can think of that you play (other than the FPS stuff you want to do) is WoW. And WoW runs on Macs.

I don't think the fact that the Mac store being in Belmont is a problem. Since you'll be going to school in the Boston area, the Mac Store therefore won't be as far as it is from here. Getting repairs will be much easier, therefore.

The pricing option, then is the largest problem - money is money. I can't help you there. But I figure that this one is best compared to buying a Hybrid car: If you're going to use and appreciate it enough, then the cost is worth the initial investment. Besides, requirements for Macs don't burn out as fast as they do for PCs - you'll still be able to get brand spanking new programs for your PC 5 years from now, where as PCs are semi-useless within two years.

The second problem, one that you didn't note, is that Mac applications are less flexible than PC programs. You can get nearly any program to do nearly any process on a PC. Macs tend to be less flexible - for example, you have Tunebite and several other programs to convert M4Ps to a MP3 for any usage. There are limited options to do that on a Mac - and where they do exist, you have to hunt harder to find these things than with a PC.
But, you're less of a file breaker than I am, so you'll probably be fine with this...I'd loose my mind.

So, in conclusion: Fix your car, buy a Mac.
My opinion.

Yea- it did take me a while to find a Mac converter for MPEG4s so I could put MGI on Stiltzkin. Even then it was only a trial size. Maybe it's because I'm used to finding things for PCs, but even with Torrents...you gotta make sure you don't spend days downloading something you'll have to find a converter for. GAH!

And Macs are usually industry standard blah blah...cept all these movies we keep seeing have a lack of mac to them...That rhymes.
