Oofuri Chapter 59

Jan 19, 2010 18:56

Fappy II is baaack! He still has some little quirks I'd like to make sure aren't real problems, and the computerfix people said to bring him back soon (it sounded like with no charge) if we noticed anything, but my mother refuses to take him back there since she's sure 'dose mechanic people' always just ruin your stuff so you have to go back to them. *sigh* Fair enough if she doesn't trust them considering the problems she's possibly had before with mechanics, but why did she PAY them for their service *if she's not going to use it”?

But I have my files again! ...Now I need to find some time to get the scanlating of Bokutachi Otoko no Ko back up again. ^_^;

And once again, deadline!fail, now as attempt to (as my mother put it) “use the shit out of” Fappy II this weekend making sure it was running normally and getting files transferred back and forth between him and his new younger brother. But actually I was close to finishing Sunday and then finished Monday but didn't have time to post. I consider this improvement, so I don't feel so bad. ^^ Still have to get right on Dolls now so no time for writing or arting for Novel Koushien, though. ...*sigh* I really need to drop/finish/get ahead in one of these projects. ^_^;;;;

SUMMARY:

Mihashi jogs with Abe's bike as they head to the doctor's. Abe gets irritated as Mihashi constantly glances back at Abe to check on him. Abe notes that while he thinks Mihashi is a good guy, he can't help but be irritated by him. He wonders if the coach was suggesting the same thing as his father was about he and Mihashi's relationship when she decided to make them do these things together. He thinks both he and Mihashi are trying their hardest to get along and does not understand what else they are supposed to do.

The two get to a hill, and Mihashi gets behind Abe's bike to push it up. When they arrive at the doctor's it is very busy and there is an hour wait before Abe can be seen. Mihashi follows a training menu written up by Momokan for him to use while he waits, and he runs very hard, thinking about trying his hardest to help the team get seeded this fall.

When they see the doctor, Mihash is completely exhausted and panting through the entire conversation. The doctor tells Abe his leg is healing well and he can start full body and isometric exercises. The doctor then asks if the two boys are from Nishiura and if Momokan also went there when she was younger. When Abe confirms she did, the doctor is delighted to be right, as he had thought he remembered Momokan. He says he remembers that she was the baseball team manager and that she frequently took a player to see him. He tells Abe to tell Momokan it was nice to see her.

Outside and ready to head back, Abe tries to have a conversation with Mihashi about Momokan's past. Mihashi misunderstands what Abe is trying to talk about and gets confused, causing Abe to give up. Both notice their difficulty communicating and note how sometimes they are able to talk more fluidly with one another, but they cannot now.

As they start back, Abe remembers to ask Mihashi about what they will do for breakfast. The two agree they can just have some rice with eggs, natto, and nori. They get to another hill, and Mihashi pushes Abe again.

When they get back, Mihashi is again exhausted. Momokan asks Mihashi what the doctor said, but he can't think of what to answer, so Abe answers for him. Abe also tells her what the doctor said about remembering her. Momokan says nothing back for a moment, surprising Abe, and then thanks Abe for telling her and tells the two to go in to listen to Shiga's talk.

Shiga lectures the team on food and nutrition. He talks about the importance of helping your body grow bigger, and how food can help with that. He talks about the amount they should eat (4500 calories since that is how much they will burning with their camp activities) and how often (they will be having 3 meals and 3 snacks throughout the day), and when (less than 2 hours after exercising to best utilize the food). He then talks about carbohydrates and proteins and how much they should eat of each. After talking about body fat percentages, (the boys should stay under 10%), he moves on to vitamins. As he continues to talk, Abe notes that this is going to make cooking breakfast troublesome, especially if he has to do it with Mihashi.

The team has lunch and goes to practice. Abe sits mending(?) balls and continues to think about the troubles of making breakfast. Momokan comes to give him an athlete's cookbook, and he apologizes and admits to her he does not think they can make breakfast alone.

Momokan calls over Chiyo and Mihashi. She explains the situation and asks Chiyo to help for the first few days, though she is clear that Chiyo is only help and Abe and Mihashi are to be the main workers. She gives them fifteen minutes to decide on a meal. Mihashi mentions he was about to go to the bullpen, and Abe tells him it is fine and that he and Chiyo can decide the menu themselves. Momokan becomes angry and tells them that he and Mihashi need to decide the menu together.

Mihashi stays and the three discuss the meal. They talk about whether they will have bread or rice, and Mihashi says yes to both, irritating Abe and making Chiyo laugh. Abe thinks rice will be easier, so they agree to this. The three try to decide a main dish by giving the cookbook to Mihashi to pick something. They ask him what he'd like to eat, and Mihashi lists many things, again irritating Abe since likely Mihashi cannot actually cook any of these things. As it turns out, Mihashi can at least cook ham and eggs, so Chiyo thinks they should do that.

As they move on, Abe says that he doesn't understand the stuff about vitamin and minerals at all, and Chiyo laughs quite a bit, surprising them. She then starts talking about other things they could have as side dishes before realizing she is saying too much when Abe and Mihashi are suppose to be deciding. The three continue to talk, and eventually manage to settle on a menu.

When they finish, Abe excuses Mihashi to go practice, and he runs off quickly. Chiyo notes that Mihashi must love practicing, and Abe (?? says he would have to?) Abe thanks Chiyo for helping them, bringing up the lackluster meal they had been planning on making before. Chiyo says it might be salvageable if they add some fruit to it, but admits it would be rather lazy.

Chiyo leaves, saying she will check if they need to buy any ingredients. She heads out of the fence and out of sight from the field and squats down, blushing madly. She can't believe how lucky she is to end up in this situation. Still, she clears her head and stands, thinking she must be careful. Abe doesn't think anything about her anyway, and it would be very bad if anyone noticed she likes him and it made things with the team weird. She consoles herself with the fact that Mihashi will be there and she will not be alone with Abe, and resolves to act normal.

After afternoon practice ends, the boys eat dinner. They take a nap, study, do more practice in the form of skateboarding, take baths and have their evening snack, have a meeting, write in their journals, and then go to bed.

The next morning when the team is at morning practice, Abe and Mihashi go into the kitchen to cook breakfast. As they enter Chiyo is already there wearing an apron. Abe comments on how eager Chiyo seems. As the two stand together talking, Mihashi notes how Abe seems to have gotten bigger and how small Chiyo looks next to him. Chiyo offers each boy an apron, but neither takes one.

Chiyo has set out the ingredients for them to start. She says they should start cooking the rice and asks if either has washed rice before. Mihashi begins to say he has, and is then embarrassed when he hears Abe has not, but still quietly admits he has anyway. Chiyo then asks him to wash the rice, explaining some things as they go.

Abe suddenly tells Mihashi not to hold any knives. Chiyo looks a bit shocked to hear this, but Mihashi agrees to do what Abe says. Abe then tells him not to do any cooking ether and to just stick to washing and setting the table. Chiyo is again surprised, and Mihashi again agrees. Chiyo finally interrupts, reminding them they are supposed to be cooking together. Abe argues that if Mihashi hurts a finger he won't be able to pitch for a day or two. Chiyo says that he can cut with his right hand to make sure it stays safe, and he can just be careful while he is cooking. Abe is skeptical about Mihashi's ability to be careful and argues (?? that it's not like he's stopping Mihashi from doing everything.)

Mihashi listens, noticing gladly that though the two are disagreeing Abe does not seem angry. Chiyo, however, listens to Abe's slightly gruff words and begins to look a bit shocked and then possibly on the verge of tears. Mihashi notices and scrambles to do something. He grabs a knife and carrot and pronounces that he can be careful while cutting. Abe become angry that Mihashi did not listen to him and gives him a noogie whilst Mihashi still holds the knife, worrying Chiyo with how reckless they are being.

Abe settles down and reminds Mihashi to be careful but allows him to continue using the knife. Mihashi peels and chops the carrot, and Abe points out that he is chopping the pieces rather big for miso soup. Chiyo laughs perhaps a little too enthusiastically at his observation, startling Abe.

When the meal is finished and served, everyone is surprised by how edible it seems (large carrots in the miso soup notwithstanding).

Elsewhere, the first match at Koushien stadium is about to start. As they wait, the twins from Kasukabe spot Haruna with his team, pointing him out as “the best southpaw in this tournament.” (??)

Abe: So is the coach trying to say the same thing?

Abe: (??look at?) the menu Momokan gave you.
Miha: Ok.

Doc: Hm.
Doc: You boys sure do grow fast. (??)
Doc: The swelling has gone down, too. // The wound is fixing back together, so it looks like you should be able to start your full body and isometric exercises.
Abe: Alright.
Doc: You two...are from Nishiura High School, is that right?
Abe: Yes.
Doc: Last time you came you were with your mother and... // Was it your sister? Did your sister graduate from the same school?
Abe: My mom and my coach. // Though she did graduate from our school, yeah...
Doc: Your coach! Ah! // And did she used to be the manager when she went to Nishiura?
Abe: Uh. // Yeah. // I think so.

10
Doc: Ah, so I was right!
Doc: So now she's the coach. // She used to bring one of the players here all the time back four or five years ago. (??'player' could either be plural or singular, but from what we know I assume it's singular?)
Doc: I thought I remembered her from somewhere!
Doc: Gosh, does that take me back! // Tell her it was nice to see her for me?
Abe: ...Yeah.
Abe: Had you heard about all that stuff with Momokan?
Miha: H- // Heard... // Like // Her exercise menu for when I was waiting?
Miha: Or to push the bike? // Listen to the doctor? // Make breakfast?

11
Miha: Yes, I heard her!
Miha: Y-
Abe: About how there was just her as the manager and one other player?
Miha: It was completely different!
Abe: Well, whatever. // If I get pissed at every little thing we'll never have a conversation.
Abe: You think what the doctor was talking about was from around then?
Miha: W-What // are we // talking about now?

Miha: Ah
Miha: Um
Miha: I
Abe: Well, // Whatever.
Abe: Yet sometimes he can keep talking fairly well. (??) // Ready to go?
Abe: Is it the subject matter?
Miha: It'd be nice // to understand each other when we talk. (??)
Miha: Y- // Yeah.
Miha: When I visited his house we talked so well, but...

12
Abe: ...Oh! // What are we going to do about breakfast?
Miha: T- // There
Miha: Could be rice
Miha: And...
Abe: Maybe eggs? ...And natto? (??)
Abe: Though I can't really eat those unless there's nori with them. (??)
Miha: I // like // all those!
Abe: You think it's ok to have them for breakfast?
Miha: It's // ok // for me!
Abe: Ah, right up here.
Abe: Ah.
Miha: Aaah...

13
Miha: I'll
Miha: Push!
Abe: Alright, let's go!
Miha: Haa...
Momo: Welcome back!
Suya: (Hey.)
Saka: (They're back.)
Momo: Was it busy?
Abe: We had to wait an hour.
Momo: (Is Mihashi ok?)
Momo: Well, you made it just in time for Shiga-sensei's lesson.

14
Momo: Mihashi-kun. // What did the doctor have to say?
Mizu: (Oh, they're back.)
Miha: Ah.
Miha: Um.
Miha: Er.
Miha: Uuum... // ?
Abe: They wrapped my leg.
Abe: And said I could start whole body and isometric exercises.
Momo: ….
Momo: I see. // Alright!
Abe: Oh. // Also,
Abe: Saitou-sensei said he remembered you // From back when you used to take a player to him all the time.

15
Momo: Thanks for letting me know! // Well, let's head in!
Momo: Mihashi-kun should wash his face and change.
Shiga: Today we'll be talking about food.
Shiga: Doing this right before lunch you might get a little hungry, but try and bear it!
-(Yes sir!)
Shiga: Alright.
Shiga: At the moment, all of you still have quite a bit of growing left to do.
Shiga: The truth is, you're all pretty slight for baseball players!
Saka: (Oh.)
Izu: (Hmph.)
Shiga: Eating is fun. (??)

16
Shiga: Up till now, all we've done is looked at how “good” our food was before we eat it.
Shiga: But now, // We're going to start our real food training!
Shiga: Wada from Bijou,
Shiga: And Kawai from Tousei were really big, weren't they?
Shiga: But they weren't any bigger than the norm for this country! (??)
Right: country
left: us
Shiga: The difference isn't in the height, but in the “thickness”! (??)

17
Shiga: Seeing the opposition all together, just their sheer mass can overwhelm you!
Shiga: Big guys can put on a scary face and use their appearance to intimidate you!
Shiga: But it's not all about looks, either!
Shiga: Kawai's throws
Shiga: And Wada's hits were pretty fierce too.

18
Shiga: Part of that, of course, is skill. // But if you're going up against whole country, then power is also essential!
Shiga: And for that you need to eat right,
Mizu: Man, I'm hungry.
Shiga: Sleep well!
Shiga: And exercise!
Taji: I'm starving~
Shiga: Make a bigger, stronger body!
Shiga: And be able to really feel the power of your muscles! (??)

19
Shiga: Now, I'll explain all the points.
Shiga: To make a bigger body, the first thing you've got to keep in mind is quantity!
Shiga: Since you'll be spending about 4500-5000 kilocalories during camp, (??it will be remembered in the body.)
Shiga: Since it would be difficult to eat an entire 4500 calories in just three meals,
Shiga: We're going to take it in six rounds by having breakfast, a snack, lunch, a second snack, dinner, and an evening snack.
Shiga: Next we'll talk about meal timing!
Taji: Six meals?!
Izu: We won't get fat?
Shiga: The food you eat will be best utilized toward helping your development, // If you eat within two hours of exercising!
Shiga: That's because growth hormones are released when you exercise.
Shiga: Since you're only eating just as many calories as you burn, if you miss this window, you won't be able to add to your growth! (??)

20
Shiga: Now on to nutrients!
Shiga: This is going to get complicated, so hang in there!
All: (Yes sir!)
Shiga: During your three main meals, you need to make a point of consuming five different nutrients!
Shiga: Those are, // Carbohydrates, protein, fats, // Vitamins, and minerals!
Shiga: Abe and Mihashi. You'll be fixing breakfast, is that right? // Then listen close!
Miha: O-
Abe: Ok.

21
Shiga: Now where can we find carbohydrates?
Shiga: Nishihiro?
Nishi: In rice or bread, // Or...corn and stuff like that?
Abe: ....
Shiga: Exactly. It's a staple of our diet. Of the 4500 calories you'll be eating, half should come from carbohydrates. // So go ahead and eat plenty of rice!
Miha: Eat
Miha: plen // ty.
Abe: This // Could be bad.
Shiga: So then what sort of things can we find protein in? // Sakaeguchi!
Saka: Yes sir! // Meat // and
Saka: Fish or eggs...
Saka: And also protein shakes.
Shiga: That's right.
Shiga: And everything that Sakaeguchi mentioned has an amino acid score of 100.
Shiga: Now, // What do you think the amino acid score of rice is?
?: Uh, 15 maybe?
Izumi: Like 3?
Taji: Wait, Sensei!
Taji: You mean there's protein in rice?
Shiga: That's right!
Shiga: And it's got an amino acid score of 61.
-(Whoa, that high?!)

22
Shiga: There are eight essential amino acids that your body can't make itself.
Shiga: This is their breakdown in rice.
Chart:
Isoleucine
Leucine
Lysine
Methionine
Phenylalanine
Threonine
Tryptophan
Valine
Shiga: Pork breaks down like this.
Shiga: It exceeds 100 for all eight types.
Shiga: Since lysine is the lowest in rice, with a score of 61,
Shiga: That means the protein in rice only has a score of 61, and the rest can't be used. (??)
Mizu: Um, Sensei?
Mizu: Since on that chart the pork seems to have a lot of extra lysine, // Or it's poking out a lot past the line, anyway. (??)
Mizu: If you take that part that goes over 100, // Would it make up for the lysine rice is short on if you ate them together?
Shiga: That's very good, Mizutani.
Shiga: In reality,
Shiga: It's not that difficult to get an amino acid score of 100 using an entire meal.

23
Shiga: But your menu for camp is taking these things into consideration, so we'd like to eat everything, even if it's not something you like.
Mizu: *whisper* There's no way I'm eating broccoli.
Suya: *whisper* I'm not good with fruit in general.
Hanai: *whisper* I can't stand pickles. *whisper*
Saka: What do I do if they give us fish eggs...
Shiga: Though if you ever do leave anything on your plate, you can always make it up drinking the bad protein!
Suya: (I love fruit!)
Mizu: (I can eat broccoli!)
Hanai: (And pickles!)
Saka: T-They // C-Couldn't // Feed us fish eggs. (??)
Shiga: So, how much protein should you eat every day?
Shiga: Anyone?
Shiga: Yes, Izumi!
Izumi: Double your weight in grams!

24
Shiga: That's right! // Just like it's written on the protein box.
Shiga: Now, the person here who weighs the most... // ...Hanai. How many grams of protein would you need?
Mizu: (Fatty.)
Hanai: (I'm not fat!)
Hanai: 69 kg times two, so 138 grams.
Shiga: Right. // And when you eat an animal-based food, every 100 grams of food of food will get you about 20 grams of protein.
Hand: (Like this.)
Shiga: So the 100 grams of ham you had for dinner last night would have about this much. (??)
-(Huh.)
-(That's not much, is it?)
-(??)
Shiga: Looks like you understand.
Shiga: For the sake of timing, we have you all drink protein during practice, (??)
Shiga: But you should be able to manage 138 grams even with just meats, fruits, and vegetables. (??)

25
Shiga: If you take in more than 138 grams, though, it won't actually help you grow any faster. (Small bubble: The extra will just turn into fat.) // So rather than do that, just make sure to get enough carbohydrates, because protein can't be used to make energy. (??)
all: (Yes sir!)
Shiga: Also be careful, // Because eating too much extra protein can also put stress on your liver!
Shiga: Next is fat! // Oils are essential for your body, however a body fat percentage of 15% can start to hold you back. (??) // Aim to stay under 10%!
Abe: [...Definitely bad.]
Izumi: (What's yours like?)
Taji: (Around 10.)
Shiga: Alright, now to get to the really complicated stuff! Vitamins! There are thirteen different kinds of vitamins divided into two different categories: water soluble and fat soluble! Vitamins A, D, and K are all fat soluble!
Abe: To think that cooking food...
Abe: Would take this much thought!
Background: (Hahaha. As if I'd actually translate all of that! ...Sorry. ^^;)

26
Mihashi arrow: (Meat)
Abe: I've never even cooked before.
Abe: And now I've got to jump in at this level? // Not to mention together with Mihashi...?
Abe: This is going to be impossible!
-(Hanai!)
[Today's meal]
food: (orange juice)
-(Hurry up!)
food: (bitter melon ??)
food: (yogurt)
Hanai: (Eh?)
food: (hijiki and rice (donburi))
Hanai: (Me?!)
food: (?? salad)

27
Abe: Food is food. // I don't get all this vitamins and minerals stuff, so we'll just have to worry about all that later. (??)
Abe: So eggs and...well at a hotel they'd give you fish, but (??) // I don't think I can grill fish.
Abe: And vegetables... // How am I supposed to add in vegetables? (??)
Abe: Thinking about food is making me hungry...
Momo: Abe-kun.
Abe: Yes ma'am!
Momo: You don't have to get up.
Momo: I brought you a cookbook made for athletes.
Momo: You guys can look at this and decide something by this evening, // And then Shiga-sensei can check it for you.
Abe: Ah. // Thank you...
Momo: Is something wrong?

28
Abe: I'm sorry!
Abe: We can't do this with just the two of us!
Momo: ...I see.
Momo: Chiyo-chan!
Momo: And // Mihashi!
Shino: (Yes ma'am!)
Miha: Y- // Yes ma'am!)

29
Momo: ...So, // Would you mind helping them out for the first few days, Chiyo-chan?
Shino: Of course!
Momo: But remember, you're just there to help. // They should be doing as much of the work as possible.
Shino: Yes ma'am!
Momo: Why don't you figure out the menu now?
Momo: Is the next fifteen minutes enough?
Miha: ...Um, I
Miha: was
Miha: going // to
Miha: the // bull...
Abe: Go ahead. Shinooka and I can figure out...
Shino: Um...
Momo: No // you // won't!

30
Momo: He can have more time for pitching practice afterward!
Momo: Abe and Mihashi are making the menu together!
Miha: Y- // Y- // Yes // ma'am!
Abe: ...Yes ma'am.
Shino: Well, let's get started!
Shino: For the staple do you want rice?
Miha: (Yeah.)
Shino: Or would you rather have bread?
Miha: (Bread too.) (Yeah.)
Abe: Look, you...
*grr*
Shino: *pff*
Shino: Hahaha!
Shino: Mihashi, you're so funny!

31
Abe: You think it's funny?
Shino: ...Ah.
Shino: W- // With the food. (??)
Shino: So what do you want?
Abe: Let's just do rice.
Abe: If we did bread, // We'd have to make one each for everyone.
Shino: Is that alright with you, Mihashi?
Miha: Y- // Yeah.
Shino: What's next?
Abe: We need two things with protein, but I don't really want raw egg or natto. (??) // I'd rather have something cooked, but...
Shino: So we can look in this book for things to make?
Shino: Here, // Mihashi-kun.
Shino: So for something over 4500... (??)
Shino: Here. // Under “main dishes.”
Miha: Uh.
Arrow: Chiyo.
Miha: Ah.
Arrow: Abe
Miha: Er...

32
Abe: ....
Abe: Anything's fine, just try picking something.
Shino: How about something you like?
Miha: I- // I like
Miha: Um. // Ah. // Ha- // Ham and eggs. // Ah. // Crab omelets. // Tuna // fried // in // oil...
Miah: Ah! // S- // Sauted // Chicken!
Abe: Can you actually make any of those things?
Miha: Uh... // Uh...
Miha: I // can
*grrrrrr*
Miha: M- // Make // Ham
Miha: And egg...
Abe: (Tch.) (Even I could make that.) (..I think.)
Shino: You can make ham and eggs?

33
Miha: ...Y- // Yes.
Shino: Then why don't we have ham and eggs for the main dish? // Then // We don't have to have natto. (??)
Abe: I don't get any of that stuff about vitamins and minerals at all, though.
Shino: Ah. // Ahahaha!
Shino: ...Ah. // S- // Sorry. // Um.
Shino: They'll be taking care of that really well with lunch and dinner, // So I think just having that and plenty of rice should be fine. (??)
Shino: Also, soup is nice and warm, and the smell helps increase appetite. // And maybe there can be some fruit, too.
Shino: (??)
Shino: We also bought some yogurt to have in the mornings. // That seems like enough to me.

34
Shino: Ah. // I'm sorry.
Shino: I got carried away.
[Eventually,]
[Somehow,]
[After innumerable pains,]
-...We're done!

Ham and eggs + lettuce, tomato

35
Miha: Shinooka // san.
Miha: T- // Thank you.
Shino: No problem!
Shino: Let's do our best tomorrow!
Miha: W-
Miha: Well // I
Abe: Yeah. // Go ahead.
Shino: Mihashi-kun really loves to practice, doesn't he?
Abe: Yeah.
Abe: He'd have to. (?? lit: If he didn't it would be no good.)
Shino: ...Oh?
Abe: Anyway, you're a lifesaver.
Abe: We'd have never made it with just me and Mihashi.
Shino: Eh?
Shino: That's not true!

36
Abe: Yeah, it is.
Abe: When we tried to do it ourselves, // pic: natto, rice, soy sauce, raw egg, seaweed // Was all we could come up with! It'd have been totally dull!
Shino: (Hahaha!)
Shino: I think if you added some fruit that would be just fine!
Abe: Seriously? // Maybe we can do that on the fourth day.
Shino: Well.
Shino: It is a little lazy.
Abe: Yeah.
Abe: Well, teach me what you can of all this baking and cooking stuff for the next three days.
Shino: Alright!
Shino: I'll check our ingredients and see if there's anything we need to buy. (??)
Abe: Thanks again!

37
Shino: How could I be this lucky?!
Shino: I need to be careful.
Shino: Abe-kun doesn't think anything of me at all.
Shino: It'll be no good if someone notices and things got weird with the team.

38
Shino: [It'll be ok. // Mihashi-kun will be there too.]
Shino: [It's not like it'll be just the two of us.]
(Chiyo's vision of Mihashi)
Shino: Normal.
Shino: I've just got to act normal!
[5:30 Afternoon practice ends.]

[6:00 Out of bed]
[Everyone else at morning practice.]
[While these three make breakfast.]
Shino: Good morning!
Abe: You're here early, Shinooka.

42
Miha: Ah. // Eh?
Miha: [Abe-kun // seems]
Abe: You're all ready to go.
Shino: Hahaha. // Want an apron?
Shino: There's one for each of you.
Abe: Eh? I don't need one.
Miha: [Bigger somehow. // Shinooka-san...]
Miha: [Looks so small...]
Shino: Mihashi-kun.
Miha: Do you want an apron?
Miha: I- // I // d-
Miha: Don't // need // one // either.
Shino: Ok.

43
Shino: I got the ingredients out myself today, // But tomorrow the two of you can do it yourselves, ok?
Abe: Yeah.
Miha: Ah. Yeah.
Shino: First you should cook the rice.
Shino: Have either of you ever washed rice before?
Miha: (Y-)
Miha: (Y-)
Abe: (Not that I can remember.)
Miha: .... // ....
Miha: ....
Miha: I // have.
Abe: (grr)
Shino: Ok, Mihashi-kun then!
Shino: Go ahead and put in ten cups (??).
Shino: Normally you'd wash till the water runs clear,
Shino: But since if you tried that with ten cups (??) you'd be here till lunch, //
Shino: Just rinse it as vigorously as you can about thee times and that should be enough.
Shino: That's really good!
Shino: Abe-kun, why don't you wash the vegetables?
Abe: Ok.
Abe: Don't tough the knives, Mihashi.

44
Shino: .... // Ah...
Miha: O- // Ok.
Abe: No cooking either.
Shino: Eh?
Abe: You can just wash stuff and set up the dishes.
Miha: Um.
Miha: Ok.
Shino: ...Um.
Shino: Um // You know, // You...
Shino: Were supposed to make breakfast together, right?

45
Abe: But if he hurts a finger he won't be able to pitch for for a whole day or maybe two.
Shino: He can use the knife with his right hand.
Shino: Then that hand won't have any chance of getting cut.
Shino: And he should be fine cooking so long as he's careful, right?
Shino: Doing nothing but washing and setting the table is a little...
Abe: There's no being careful enough with this guy. He could hurt himself on notebook paper. (??)
Abe: It's not like I'm not letting him do anything at all. (??)
Miha: Ah.
Miha: He's not...
Miha: Really angry.
Miha: That's go... // ?!

46
Miha: Ah, I- // I can
Miha: Be careful // when // I cut!
Abe: Were you even listening to what I said?!
Miha: Eep.
Shino: ...Ah
Shino: That's very dangerous!
Abe: Tch. // You'd better be careful.
Shino: Just peel the skin off. (??) // Very good.
Shino: Once you're done with that, cut off the ends. // Slow is fine.
Abe: Hey. // Aren't those awfully big pieces for miso soup?
Shino: ...Pff.
Shino: Hahaha!
Shino: They really are!

47
Abe: That sort of started me.
-(Whoa!)
-(It actually looks edible!)
Mom: Ah~
-(Those carrots in the soup are huge!)
-(Ok!)
-(Looks good!)
-(Let's eat!)
Momo: It turned out a lot better than I expected! // Nice work, Chiyo-chan!

(Uuuh. So as it turns out I actually HAVE read this entire chapter. It's the NEXT one that I didn't finish. ^^)

So what first? Chiyo's crush?!?!?!

In an alternate dimension in which Shinooka is creepy, I think she has an Abe doll with an apron on it hidden under her bed.

Hehehe. That poor girl. She even knows it's a hopeless case. That's one of the saving graces of this development for me. Generally speaking it makes me a little sad/disinterested to see more het invading my slash-world, plus if the two were ever actually to get together it would seem to me just...weird and uninteresting.

BUT, Chiyo isn't irritating like some girls in anime (if perhaps a little too sweet for my usual tastes), the development (and getting to see how she deals with it) makes her a bit less generic, I can't completely blame her for liking Abe since I can admit to having swooned over his gigantic brainz myself despite his glaringly obvious flaws (hehehe), and I'm finding it hard to think of any character in the entire series she could have LESS of a chance of catching. Hahahah. Seriously, is there ANYTHING Abe thinks about besides baseball and Mihashi? ^_^;

Reading it a second time, though, I admit I kind of wonder... He does make small talk with her, and that's more than we see him do with a lot of people (at least in the parts of his life we've seen through his manga). I'm pretty sure (especially considering some things that are said in the next chapter ^_^;) that he has no interest NOW, but things can change over the years. T_T

Page 45 makes me wonder some things in particular. I'm not really sure what's being suggested with Chiyo's reaction at the end of the page when she starts maybe-sort-of-crying? I wish I did, hehe. When I first read it I sort of took it as 'Oh! Mihashi noticed that Abe wasn't angry but Chiyo didn't! So in some ways, Mihashi is actually starting to understand Abe better than some other people! Yay~” But on second thought, was what Mihashi was noticing that “If I'd disagreed with him he'd have gotten angry, but he didn't get angry at her”? *sniff* Though I guess the latter could also work out interestingly, since maybe it could be the start of realizing more that Abe doesn't necessarily get angry at someone for disagreeing with him, and that therefore he (Mihashi) can do it too. ...Hahah, but I can't help but be a little paranoid Abe is being nice to Chiyo. ^^

I really don't WANT Abe to start getting interested, because then I think I'll start disliking Chiyo (though I'll feel bad about it, hahaha). As it is, when I feel like it's hopeless, I feel sympathetic towards her. Her occasional awkwardness is sort of cute. And I actually sort of respect her for the way she understands and copes with the fact that Abe isn't interested, and the way she puts the team before her personal interests. Having a crush on a guy doesn't turn her completely dysfunctional, it doesn't turn into the center of her life. She knows how to clear her head and look at things in perspective. I like that.

As for the Abe and Mihashi stuff here...On one hand I'm very happy to see so much of them interacting in a chapter, and in such fun ways. But when I read these (as always, my reaction is not so vividly felt anymore with it having been so long since I first read this, but as I remember it...) I was actually on one level rather discontent/disappointed the whole time (vastly amused though I was on another).

I mean jeez, they just had this HUGE discussion about how they were going to try to cooperate. Was anyone else DYING to see how they'd interact the next time they saw one another after that? And yet they see each other in the last chapter and....they are acting just as usual! *Exactly* as usual. Abe's getting pissed at him for being jumpy, and (this is the part that made me especially sad) he doesn't even feel bad about it. I thought after all that happened, we'd at least see Abe noticing more often when he treats Mihashi badly and feeling a little guilt about it. Now in this chapter they do at least mention the talk, and notice they aren't speaking as well with one another as they did before...but that's it. T_T

I didn't want to see a huge change. If Abe and Mihashi's relationship improves too much, there won't be any more story. How Abe and Mihashi learn to work together *IS* the story of Oofuri. Besides that, it just wouldn't be realistic. People make proclamations that they will change all the time. Actually managing to do it is another story. And it's certainly not a fast process.

B-But... But I guess I wanted to see...disappointment? Frustration? If I make a resolution I really care about and I find myself not doing well with it, I get *frustrated* with myself. Mihashi is just acting his slightly-discontent-with-how-they-can't-communicate self, and Abe is about the same, just mildly discontent.

It sort of makes me think of the discussion of goals before. Before, the team was just sort of vaguely aiming to do the best they can, just as Abe and Mihashi were vaguely aiming to get along the best they can. Now they choose something to aim for. Win Koushien/learn to cooperate, combine their strengths, have a more equal relationship. It's supposed to change the way you behave. The team is certainly working harder. But Abe and Mihashi seem to have gone back in time, back to before they made their resolution and were still just vaguely aiming toward generally getting along better. Abe even still seems to take the implication he and Mihashi don't get along well enough as an attack!

It really disappointed me. I thought Higuchi was honestly going to take Abe and Mihashi's relationship a slight step forward. It's going forward, but at the usual snail's pace of before. If the pivotal (or at least pivotal SEEMING at the time) talk hadn't happened, I'd have been fine with that. But that talk built expectations of something more, maybe something new, and the current chapters are letting those down. T_T It makes me sad, because now the NEXT time we see something pivotal seeming character development-wise...I'm not sure if I'll get as excited, because now I don't know if I trust Higuchi to follow through.

...Though for the record, I don't trust 99% of manga to follow through with cool character development it seems to sometimes suggest anyway. I just learn to deal with it. ^_^; It just makes me sad, because up till now Oofuri was one of the very rare stories I thought I might trust with that. T_T

In more cracktacular observations, Mihashi noticing Abe's body changing gives me nose bleeds, Mizutani is way too happy to be praised and a total dooooork, Hanai is a fattttyyyyyyyy~ (...I don't know why it thrills me so much to think of any of the boys being fat, hahaha), SKATEBOARDING!? (...Do they ALL skateboard? T_T *needz arts naowwww*), what is Tajima showing Izumi on page 40 because they seem so delighted and I wish I knewwwww, I love that she brought back in Mihashi's fondness for large pieces of carrot (lol, of all the things...), Abe is a total piggy BOY who has never even washed rice for himself, and I seem to have a thing for seeing Izumi sleeping. I...always stare at the way his gorgeous hair flops gorgeously around whatever he's laying his head on. Gorgeously. Hahaha.

...Uuuh. And now I most definitely think I've written quite enough for one day. ^_^;
