Chapter 680: Once Again
Spoilers of course, and some large images; this chapter had some very nice dramatic panels.
SUMMARY
We open just as our heroes have been transported into Kaguya's new dimension or wherever they are! Unfortunately for them this dimension is full of lava and they have appeared in mid-air. Kakashi thinks for a moment that this must be an illusion, but then he realizes that the heat from the lava is all too real.
Luckily, Sasuke can summon giant birds on command, and saves himself. He then has his giant bird grab Naruto, but Naruto is upset!
He wanted Sasuke to rescue the others, not him! But luckily, Kakashi has managed to save himself, Sakura, AND Obito all at once. He tied a scroll to a kunai, threw the kunai into the wall, and grabbed onto the scroll with one hand and Sakura with the other, keeping them above the lava. He also threw a kunai through Obito's hand, pinning him to the wall as well. Pretty impressive, Kakashi!
Sakura's forehead protector slips off and falls into the lava, where it at once burns away to nothing, confirming that this isn't an illusion. Kakashi wonders...are they in another dimension?
Sasuke scolds Naruto and tells him to focus on Kaguya. He explains...if either Sasuke or Naruto dies, the world will end. Their yin and yang power from the Sage of Sixth Paths is the only thing that can seal Kaguya away. If they fail, all of humanity will be annihilated.
Sasuke says that during the Infinite Tsukuyomi, it was just random chance that Sakura and Kakashi were standing next to Naruto and thus got saved and transported here. Basically, they can't be Sasuke and Naruto's priority, because they have to focus on keeping themselves alive so they can save the world.
Naruto says that he understands what Sasuke is saying, but at times like that, his body just moves on its own...just as Sasuke said way back at the beginning of the manga, when he nearly died protecting Naruto during the fight against Haku.
Naruto says that he's sure Sasuke knows what he means. Sakura thinks to herself that Sasuke is right--saving the world is, after all, the most important thing--but she's grateful to Naruto for caring about them even so.
Then, just at that moment, the scroll holding up Kakashi and Sakura starts to burn and give way! They start falling into the lava!
Naruto reaches out with a chakra hand and grabs them just before they hit the lava.
But even as he does so, Kaguya's eyes turn into Byakugan, and she attacks!
Sasuke tries to block the attack with some kind of chakra shield, but Kaguya saw the hawk's vital points with her Byakugan and managed to strike them--the hawk is going down! Sasuke realizes that he has to use Susanoo...
Meanwhile, back in the real world, Madara's chakra rods that were paralyzing the zombie Kages are vanishing. They can move again! The three Hokages at once start racing to the source of the huge chakra they can sense.
Minato doesn't seem able to stand just yet, but sensing Madara's chakra vanish, he wonders if they managed to defeat Madara and thinks that he must go to Naruto at once.
Meanwhile, back in the other dimension...Naruto has saved everyone just in time!
Kakashi is shocked to realize that Naruto can now float in the air! He realizes that Madara started floating right after getting the Sage chakra as well. Naruto creates a clone to keep holding Kakashi and Sakura, but keeps hold of Sasuke so they can fight. Kaguya watches and is reminded of her son, the Sage...but this seems to only make her angry!
She wants to blend all chakra into one, as it was in the past...and presumably, she wants to have all that chakra for herself. She charges forward, but Naruto flings Sasuke, still inside his chakra shield, at her!
Then it seems that Sasuke uses Susanoo just as Naruto throws him into Kaguya, creating a combination attack.
Whether this attack succeeded, and what Kaguya will do next...well, we'll have to wait until next week to find out!
REVIEW
This is a battle chapter, so there's not too much to say. It seems that Kaguya's goal is to get back all the chakra in the world. Why she wants this is not entirely clear. Sheer desire for power? Belief that humans will only cause harm with chakra? Some weird instinct passed on from the chakra tree? Who knows!
Sasuke and Naruto's conversation makes me think of the classic 'Friend or Idol' trope that comes up a lot in video games. This trope is usually used something like this: the hero has some object which can be used to destroy the world/gain ultimate power/whatever. The villain wants this object, and the hero is just about to escape with it/destroy it/whatever, when the villain shows up...with a hostage! The villain then demands that the hero hand over the object, or else their best friend/love interest/mentor/whoever will die. Usually the hero does so and rescues the hostage, and characters who fail to rescue the hostage are often portrayed as being, if not evil, at least very ruthless.
Here we have a somewhat similar situation, except the 'idol' in question is Naruto and Sasuke themselves. It seems that this scene is meant to contrast Naruto and Sasuke: Sasuke is more logical and pragmatic, while Naruto is more intuitive and empathic. Perhaps as the battle goes on, the ultimate message will be that you need both. They are, after all, holding the yin and yang chakra, and yin and yang are usually seen as balancing and completing each other. Perhaps they will win because Sasuke's cautious, goal-focused approach keeps them alive, while Naruto's more reckless, save-everyone attitude ends up giving them the key to victory or whatnot.
Also, I note that Kaguya's special dimension appears to contain only Movie Lava, that special sort of lava which is only dangerous if you actually touch it, as opposed to real lava, which is, you know, incredibly hot and therefore harmful if you dangle right over it. This is super common in fiction but it always makes me laugh a little.
