Chapter 662: The end of reality
As usual hidden behind cuts for pictures, spoilers and length.
Chapter Summary
The chapter starts with with a couple of coloured pictures, most notably of Madara, Naruto and Sasuke. Both boys are on the brink of death. Naruto is suffering from the extraction of the kyuubi, while Sasuke has been stabbed with his own sword. Gaara is transporting Naruto out of the zone of danger, but he plans to carry him back there again, because only Naruto can fight Madara.
Also suddenly the Mokuton is getting active again. The assembled shinobi wonder who might control it, as Hashirama obviously is not able to do this.
They panick, as they cannot do anything against the Mokuton's attacks. The kages have run out of chakra, and also, the Mokuton is now attacking with the five heads above the "real" head, and each head controls a different element. There's hardly anything the ninja can do.
It turns out that Obito - or is it rather Zetsu now? - is controlling the Mokuton. He's mocking the ninja, comparing the sensation of shitting oneself to the relief after killing a person. (This is really a gross comparison. Who'd feel relieved after killing someone?)
Luckily the Third Hokage (whom we haven't seen for some time) turns up to fight the Mokuton. He is able to stop it and to neutralize its attacks.
We see Sakura, Shizune and Tsunade discuss what they should do. Sakura suggests that she and Shizune should focus on attacking, not on healing. There's no time left to heal people.
Sasuke's former team and Orochimaru are discussing what's going on. They wonder whether now is the best time to intervene, but Orochimaru thinks it's too early. Then Karin realizes that something has happened to Sasuke.
The ninja around the kages, who have just been saved from the Mokuton, have now discovered Gaara who's approaching them on a cloud of sand. Naruto's lying on another cloud. They are shocked to discover that Naruto is on the point of dying. Gaara wants to take Naruto back to the battlefield (the corner where Madara is fighting) and he expects Tsunade to heal Naruto on the way. However, Tsunade does not have enough chakra left to heal him, so it's Sakura who accompanies Gaara and tries to heal Naruto.
Hinata has also realized now that Naruto is in danger of dying. She hurries to help him, but she stumbles while she's running. She remembers Neji's request that she should protect Naruto.
We return to Sasuke. He's no longer able to support himself and breaks down.
Madara states that Sasuke must have experienced quite a few losses during his life, but that also he must have had something he was looking for. Nonetheless he will die now. Sasuke protests: He won't die: he still wants to show the village what a real kage is.
Sakura is desperately trying to save Naruto. Karin in the meantime despairs as she senses that Sasuke is going to die. The chapter ends with a double-panel of Sasuke and Naruto.
Thoughts on the chapter
I must admit that I run out of thoughts...
Well, neither Sasuke nor Naruto will die. They are the heroes of the manga (yes, Sasuke too), so they both need to survive. Without them Madara cannot be defeated.
I wondered a bit about Sasuke's thoughts before he is breaking down. I guess I am the only person who still longs that someone will call the Uchiha massacre a crime, but I fear that my wish won't be fulfilled. I wonder what Sasuke means when he claims that he wants to show the village what a true Hokage is like: that he won't kill people, or order people to be murdered, that he will accept responsibility for what happened while he was Hokage? But all this should be clear without a teenager showing it the village.
At least it's appears now clear that Sasuke does not plan to betray the village.
On the other hand, his team might side with Orochimaru and betray the ninja army. Apparently Orochimaru is biding his time, but it's not clear what he's waiting for or what he plans to do. Also I wonder what side Sasuke's team mates are on. I can't tell about Suigetsu, but my impression is that Karin and Juugo genuinely like Sasuke and won't betray him.
I wonder who's behind the mask: Obito or Zetsu. Maybe Obito's time is really over, and it's now Zetsu who's controlling the Mokuton.
