NARUTO CH 489 - ON THE BRINK OF WORLD WAR!
Naruto Thursday has arrived once again. Check out my thoughts on the latest action concerning my favorite yellow-haired nin.
CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS
-The toads from Mount Myouboku are seen discussing the Nine Tails.
-We get to see a cool color picture of the Joint Shinobi Army. I'll skip inserting it here as it is very large, but I will insert the link so you can see it again in all it's glory.

-Tsunade discusses the Shinobi alliance and Madara with Kakashi. She calls a planning session to prepare for war.
-The war council is in session with Shikamaru and his father in attendance.
-Naruto learns from Sakura that Tsunade has recovered. While eating his ramen, he is reverse summoned to Mount Myouboku. Here he learns his fate from the Great Elder.
-Naruto is given the key to fully release the kyuubi at will. This key will also allow him to perfect "that" jutsu.
-Finally, Anko reappears and she is in pursuit of Kabuto. Kabuto shows up at Madara's hideout and a fight ensues. Kabuto uses a jutsu that only the second and Orochimaru knew - the impure world resurrection jutsu. We get to see a creepy scene where it looks like Kabuto has resurrected members of the Akatsuki.
MY THOUGHTS
This chapter was similar to the last one in tone. There were quite a few light hearted moments, but in between those silly bits there was some substance that seems to set up what's going to happen in future chapters. I'll be sticking to the most important events.
TSUNADE TAKES BACK THE REINS
So, Kakashi is alright with not being Hokage. I thought as much.
Kakashi and Tsunade talk about both Madara and the Joint Shinobi Army. I'm not satisfied with the amount of detail we have on this Army, but I suspect we will learn more about them as time goes on. Is the Leaf Village even part of this army? I didn't see any evidence to suggest they are.
As for Madara, I don't expect the question of whether or not he is really alive to be answered until the very end. In the mean time, we will be mercilessly taunted with hints about the real identity of Tobi.
MOUNT MYOUBOKU AND THE TOADS
Naruto's meeting with the Great Elder toad seems anticlimactic to me. Naruto already knows his fate concerning Sasuke. And the part about meeting an octopus is not entirely a surprise. The octopus must be Killer Bee whose chance of surviving is looking better all the time. Are we going to see Naruto train with Killer Bee to learn how to better work with the nine tails as has been already suggested? I think we will. I'm really looking forward to this happening. I'm also curious to see "that" jutsu. It's possible Naruto will also be training with the toads for a little while too.
KABUTO AND MADARA
Kabuto seeking out Madara? And looking to join forces with him? I did not expect this at all. Last I heard, Kabuto was looking at getting revenge for Orochimaru by going after Sasuke. Is this for real or is this a way for Kabuto to get close enough to Sasuke to kill him? Or maybe succeed with Orochimaru's original plan of taking Sasuke's body? I guess this is possible since Kabuto absorbed part of Orochimaru.
Also, it sounds like Kabuto is not entirely convinced Tobi is Madara either. "Excuse me . . . You go by Madara these days, don't you." It sounds more like a question than a statement.
Kabuto has sure learned some interesting moves. Impure world resurrection jutsu? I thought Danzou's arm was creepy. Seeing the formerly dead Akatsuki brought back to "life" like a bunch of "zombies" takes the cake. This was even creepier than Madara's wall of eyes. I hope this is just Kabuto trying to impress Madara with his abilities by performing a parlor trick. I don't actually want to see the formerly dead Akatsuki return to be used as soldiers by Kabuto, especially Itachi. Itachi deserves a better fate than this. Any time zombies show up in Naruto, you get a less than desirable story line.
OVERVIEW
While I enjoyed the chapter I was hoping for a little more action. Are we being set up for a wicked cliffhanger chapter right before Golden Week?
It seems like we are being given pieces to a very large puzzle and eventually we will see them fit together in a final picture. There were not a lot of surprises here, except for Kabuto. I was expecting him to show up, do whatever he was going to do, then disappear. It looks like Kabuto is going to be around for a while. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Whatever story line Kabuto ends up in, I hope it is a good one and not just a lame vehicle to be able to extend the life of the manga. I'm a Naruto fan to the core and I would hate to see a time when I did not enjoy it as much as I do now. Regardless of what happens, I'm along for this ride until the very end!
I expect we will get down to more serious business with the next chapter. As usual, looking forward to next week . . .
