The chapters come out so early lately! And I simply cannot make myself writing an entry about it on Wednesday night; it completely messes with my weekly schedule...
Anyway, here's the chapter I've been dreading since last week.
Since we have various characters I've broken my chapter review into several paragraphs, starting with;
Naruto
The chapter starts with Naruto, who is waking up at the inn, and Yamato is with him in the room. Last time we saw Naruto he collapsed after hyperventilating. He immediately asks where Kakashi and Sai are.
Naruto seems to take the news that he's to go back to the village (Konoha I presume) good; he doesn't protest but simply looks sad after waking up so troubled. But when he tries to take his pack, Yamato blocks him with a wood jutsu, explaining that Kakashi takes care of "the issue with Sakura himself". Naruto seems to give in again, saying that he wants to rest for a while before they can go back.
But he's not going to give up, after all that's his nindo :) When Yamato comes to pick him up, Naruto fakes that he wants to stay inside, but all the while he has a kunai under his blanket, and there's a whole in the ceiling. And on the next page we see him running in a forest, in sage mode, determined to follow Kakashi's chakra which he has picked up.
It's nice to see Naruto rebelling! It reminds me very much of
Senior_Witch's fanfic "
The Canalized River", in which she also let's Naruto take his own decisions. After all, he's not a kid anymore...
But Naruto isn't the only one who doesn't listen to his superior's anymore. Next is
Sasuke
It's the aftermath of the fight between Danzou and Sasuke, with Sasuke as the victor. Danzou looks very dead when Madara tells us what he's going to do and what he wants Sasuke to do;
Madara, the creepy eyeball collector, we'll see more of this later. I remember that he also was collecting Itachi's eyes, asking if Sasuke wanted one (or more), and Sasuke declined. This time he doesn't ask, but gives some fatherly advice that Sasuke should rest because it's dangerous for his eyesight and that "sometimes [one] needs patience to achieve their goals". Madara certainly is slowly with hisrevenge; it's his great grandson (or something like that) who he uses for his own vengeance.
Next we see Madara 'whirlwind' Danzou, some kind of absorption of the body so he doesn't have to carry it around, but he stops to give Sasuke more advice; Kill Karin because she knows too much. He doesn't wait to see Sasuke follow his orders (erm, first he tells Sasuke to go and then he tells him to kill the girl, apparently he knows that Sasuke isn't that willing to listen to him)
And here's a picture which gives me hope. It's Sasuke questioning his loyalty to Madara. He said before that Team Taka was using Akatsuki for their own goals, and he never seemed to be a follower of Madara, though Madara always gave the impression that Sasuke was his pawn. I'm glad that the boy still is able to think for himself, and just like Naruto he seems to wriggle away from his superior. Still, there's the issue with Karin, who's still alive. Is she going to be killed by Sasuke? So far Sasuke is looking in the distance.
It's flashback time for Karin, never a good sign because the more flashbacks we see, the bigger the chance that someone is dead...
We see Karin in the Forbidden Forest, during the Chuunin exam! In chapter 45-64 we saw the hunt of the teams to bring the two Heaven and Earth scrolls to the meeting tower. I was wondering if perhaps Kishimoto now has a deeper meaning for the message which they received in chapter 64 by Iruka-sensei (see
here and
here, who explained how the "Heaven" scroll represented the mind, and the "Earth" the body. By knowing ones strengths and weaknesses they can train and improve. These qualities help one grow stronger and wiser and thus worthy of becoming a Chuunin. I started to think that perhaps Naruto and Sasuke represent Heaven and Earth or so, but I'm sure I'm seeing more than there was intended now :)
Back to genin!Karin, who is looking for her teammates in the Forbidden Forest, when a stupid looking bear attacks her. The poor girl looses her glasses, so she hardly can see Sasuke defeating the boar with his Lion Combo.
She's in an awful state, but compares Sasuke's face then and now.
It is interesting to see that she's about the same age as Sasuke, and it's even more interesting that they ran into each other during the Chuunin exam, she was separated from her team. I've read on the forum of Narutofan that apparently she's from the Hidden Grass, who had two teams of three genin entering the Chuunin exam, and Orochimaru killed three of them then. Also according to the databook, Karin apparently was the sole survivor of a destroyed village and got picked up by Orochimaru. Either way, she made a quick progress there, ending up as the caretaker of the Northern Hideout. And it seems that Kishimoto has been desperately making a nice flashback for her here...
I now fast-forward to the last pages of this chapter, where Sasuke shows the tattoo on his wrist (I can't read the kanji so I don't know what he's planning to do) and Karin bracing herself. But then, from the other side of the bridge, it's Sakura yelling his name. Sasuke clenches his fist, and looks up. Sakura declares that she's "abandoning the Leaf Village and coming with him". Well, I wonder if she's going with him to destroy Konoha and the Elders, I really doubt it... Though Sakura notices too that Sasuke doesn't feel like the old Sasuke.
Back to Madara, who has an even more impressive collection than Orochimaru used to have;
Note the Uchiha fan above...
What's he going to do with Danzou's corpse is the eye he wants from Shisui is crushed, probably because Danzou didn't want him to obtain it for the collection?
And I don't even want to think about this huge secret collection! Did Madara collected all the Uchiha eyes after the massacre? And is he planning to add Sasuke's too?
And back to the one who rebels perhaps the most but perhaps the one who lies to everyone and to herself the most,
Sakura
I jumped to Sakura finally meeting up with Sasuke, but in order to reach him she had to deceive all her old and new team mates. Kakashi already is on his way to her, and Naruto is following him, so it won't be long before she's caught.
It's Sai who tries to stop Sakura actively, by drawing snakes to hold her back. Akamaru is the one who is afraid, dragging Kiba with him, while Sakura tries to flee with Lee (who's never been able to speak up against her I'm afraid). Some explosives added to the general confusion make that she's finally able to shake everyone off and disappear.
Sai's clone catches up with Kakashi, who seems impressed;
I still wonder what's gotten into her head. She has lied to everybody, even to herself, and now she will lie to Sasuke. And Sasuke has heard so many lies and half-hearted truths in his life, that he also isn't very good with black and white. I wonder what's will happen now. Karin seems well enough to wonder who Sakura is, and I wonder if Sakura is going to heal Karin. It would be an act of disloyalty towards Madara if Sasuke allows Karin to live, though I can't help to wonder that those two girls are going to be fierce rivals for the love of Sasuke.
Karin's chances to live are getting bigger with Kakashi and Naruto on their way towards her too, though then they would give Sakura a chance to heal Karin, instead of holding her back.
I'll keep crossing my fingers that Sasuke isn't turning total evil, but this chapter has given me some hope. He has questioned is loyalty to Madara into Madara's face, he stopped killing off Karin, and it seems he's willing to listen to Sakura.
Right now Team 7 are all missing nins, if you say that they all have abandoned Konoha. It's a nice fanfic plotbunny I have to say, but the three to them all want to hold the other(s) back. Still, lot's of interesting stuff will happen, I'm sure, in the next chapter!
