It had been a bad idea. It had been a really bad idea.

What with today being their first anniversary, Kakashi had wanted to do something special for Iruka. Of course, his version of something special involved spending a day and night (and perhaps another day and night) hidden away in their bedroom, but Iruka had warned him a day before that he wouldn’t accept that. If that were the case, well, Iruka would make it a point to lock the jounin in the closet. Alone.

Iruka was not a man of idle threats. Well, when they were directed at him at least.

So with this in mind, Kakashi had been sent out to find a proper way to celebrate their anniversary. He had a little break from all of his missions, and with team seven dispersed, there was no excuse for him not to. However, he didn’t really know where to start. What did a normal person do? Icha Icha Paradise did not depict a normal person’s romantic lifestyle. Unfortunately, that was the only place he could draw ideas from without outside help.

The jounin had been about to find Kurenai or Asuma to ask for advice when Gai had flew in with his usual dynamic entry. (Kakashi carefully stepped aside and avoided the surprise attack.) After the usual energetic greetings involving many repetitions of the phrases “springtime of youth” and “worthy rival,” Gai finally quieted down as much as he ever would and noted the thoughtful expression on the other’s face.

Well, Gai wasn’t really sure if it was thoughtful or not, but it was different from his rival’s usual apathetic stare, and that was what caught his attention. Clapping a hand on Kakashi’s back, he flashed him a blinding smile. “What is wrong, my great rival? Why are you not enjoying this fine weather? Could it be that something is troubling you? Has the springtime of youth passed you by?”

Kakashi shot the other a look to shut him up, but to no avail. Gai continued on for another five minutes, and finally, he stopped. “I’m looking for Kurenai and Asuma,” Kakashi said. “Have you seen them?”

Gai laughed and went on for ten minutes about how those two were also enjoying the springtime of youth and had gone on a mission together. Kakashi heaved a sigh. He inquired about all of their jounin friends, but he got the same answer. So all the sane jounin had left Konoha, and the only person to ask was… Gai.

Wonderful. Just wonderful.

“How do people… usually celebrate their anniversary?” he asked, doing his best to appear nonchalant. Admittedly, that meant acting like himself, but still, Kakashi put in a bit of extra effort this time around. If he sounded even a bit excited about the matter, he didn’t doubt that the other would spend the next five days following him around spouting ridiculous lovey-dovey stories and words.

“My eternal rival is to celebrate his first anniversary! Oh, you have beaten me there, Kakashi! I have yet to find myself a woman who will share my joy and…”

Gai had started waltzing around the field, eyes screwed shut as he pranced about. Kakashi could’ve sworn that he saw shoujo bubbles behind the other when he wasn’t being blinded by his smile. Who knew how long Gai was going to babble.

Maybe he should have asked Godaime or those two chuunin that were always with her for help.

oOo

About an hour later (and after asking Gai to shut up a hundred times), Kakashi found himself standing inside a flower shop with a bouquet of roses in his hand. He looked at it and then over at Gai who looked like he wanted to buy everything in the shop. The number of flowers in his hands grew ever larger, and the silver-haired jounin had to wonder if the other meant to give them all to him.

With a soft sigh, he looked down at the flowers in his hand - chosen by the florist, not Gai - and as he was inching toward the cashier to pay and get away quickly, the other jounin shoved the enormous and badly created bouquet into his face. “A dozen roses are not enough to express your love, Kakashi! You must show Iruka-sensei how much you love him!”

Kakashi looked at his own bouquet and then the one the other was offering. Surely Iruka cared more for quality over quantity, right? If that were the case, he should have been fine… Unfortunately for him, Gai had already plucked the roses out of his hands and added them to his ugly array of flowers.

The florist snickered quietly.

oOo

“Now that you have a beautiful arrangement of flowers, you must create a meal that matches it! Iruka-sensei will be in awe of your display of affection!”

Kakashi stared blankly at Gai, who now sported an apron stating “LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST” on its front. He himself found himself wearing one that read “FOREVER YOUNG” on it; obviously, it wasn’t his. “I still think going out to dinner would be better,” Kakashi muttered, giving the pots and pans a dubious look. “Can you even cook, let alone teach me to cook?”

Gai simply gave him the nice guy pose before picking up the butcher knife.

While the other was a talented ninja, Kakashi couldn’t help but wonder if he should trust the other with… that sort of knife. It was large, unwieldy, and a cooking utensil. The silver-haired jounin had never eaten anything cooked by Gai before, but he could make a guess as to why.

About a ten minutes after they started, Kakashi had to use a water jutsu to put out the fire that had erupted in his apartment. Gai found himself kicked out soon after.

oOo

It was around five in the afternoon, and Iruka was due back any minute now. The flowers were a wet, burnt mass, the kitchen looked as if a bomb had went off in it (which was partially true), and the rest of the apartment was wet. Kakashi had dried off a small corner of the dining table and was sitting there, head hidden in his hands.

It had truly been a mistake to ask Gai to help him set up his anniversary celebration.

The gentle click at the door signaled the chuunin’s return, and a thud soon followed after. Kakashi looked up, a miserable look written across his face. He could see Iruka standing in the doorway, a bag of groceries near his feet where he had dropped it, and a surprised look on his face.

“Kakashi-sensei, what happened?” he asked, lifting his eyes to meet the jounin’s. Kakashi didn’t say anything, simply turning to look away once more. Iruka gave him a sympathetic smile and closed the door behind him. His eyes caught the remains of the flowers, and he picked up the dripping mass. “Were these… for me?”

The jounin glanced over and nodded his head before slipping off the table to hold Iruka. “I asked Gai to help, but… things didn’t go as planned,” he murmured, resting his forehead against the chuunin’s. He laughed dryly. “Sorry I messed up.”

“Was it because of what I said?” Iruka asked, a sheepish smile crossing his features. He scratched at the scar stretching across his nose. Kakashi had even gone so far to ask for help… It was a pity that said help ended up being Gai. “I didn’t mean that you had to do anything special… I just wanted to spend some time with you.” He gave Kakashi a pointed look. “And I don’t mean in bed the entire time.”

“Why… don’t we go out for dinner tonight?” Iruka suggested after getting a glance over the jounin’s shoulder at the kitchen. “After that, we can… come back and clean the apartment together.”

Kakashi nodded quietly. So it looked like they were to spend their anniversary night cleaning the apartment. There went his grand plans. He sighed and trudged toward the door.

“Though, if we hurry, we may still have time to have a little fun later on.”

The jounin slowly turned and found Iruka grinning at him. He was looking slightly embarrassed, but Kakashi took that invitation gladly nonetheless. He reached out and took the chuunin’s hand before slipping an arm around the small of his back. Kakashi placed a quick kiss on Iruka’s lips and then pulled them out the door. “Let’s go.”

There was still hope. He looked forward to this event after they finished cleaning.
