Itachi arrived at the Hokage's residence just after nightfall. To his surprise, the Hokage was expecting him.

"When I first asked you if you were prepared to do anything that was necessary to ensure the safety of Konohagakure..." the old man whispered cautiously, "know that I did not expect a night such as this one to ever come. I understand the depths to which you suffer now, but you must complete your mission."

Itachi merely bowed his head. He could sense the conviction behind the Hokage's words, but didn't know the terrible truth behind them. When faced with capturing and executing his own pupil, a man so warped and twisted by power that he could hardly be called human anymore, even the Hokage could not do it. His love for the village was great, but even greatness can falter.

At all costs, he could not allow Itachi to make the same mistake.

"Your loyalty to the village is unquestionable, Itachi Uchiha. Should you complete this mission, the council will unanimously appoint you as my successor." he continued softly. "It would be my honor to bestow upon you the title of..."

"No." Itachi interrupted sharply. The ache in his chest was swelling so quickly he could hardly breathe. "I can't accept that."

"You must."

"No. Lord Hokage, I beg you, please... let it be Sasuke instead." Beneath his mask, Itachi felt a single tear slide down his cheek. "Please... I will take my own house last. I will hesitate long enough let him catch me in the act. He won't know the truth. No one will. I will make them all believe that I have sold my soul to the devil. I will flee the village in disgrace, and when he is old enough, strong enough, he can kill me. He can restore honor to the Uchiha clan. He can take my place..."

The Hokage gazed down with pity at the ANBU soldier now kneeling before him. He was so young, and yet, he was so strong, ready to sacrifice so much for so many.

"Very well." the Hokage replied. "I will spare your brother and will see to it that he is protected until he is able to protect himself..."

"Thank you, Lord Hokage." Itachi couldn't help but smile as the weight in his chest was suddenly lifted.

"...On one condition."

"Anything."

"After you have left the village, you are to infiltrate the criminal organization known as the Akatsuki. To date, all our attempts to discover their objectives has failed. But after tonight, you should be able to join their ranks without question. Report back as soon as you are able."

"I understand." Itachi stood and bowed once again.

In another instant he was gone, with only the Hokage's final gift to sustain him through the long night ahead.

Oh, ow....
Beautifully done and perfect with the tone of the song. Also... interesting idea that this would have put him in line for Hokage. "Let it be Sasuke instead." I don't know what's sadder, the fact that he would request that, or the irony ;-;
