Gai thought it would be amusing to get his rival falling down drunk, and indeed it was for all of an hour, before the maudlin set in and Kakashi cried like a small child for all the lives he couldn't save, starting with Sakumo and ending with Team Seven.

When he's drunk, he sees Gai in every scrap of green, he hears him in every roaring laugh, he feels him in every fleeting touch, but as soon as Kakashi sobers up, Gai goes back to being a name on the memorial, ashes buried in the cemetery, a fading memory.

When Kakashi wakes up naked with Gai just as naked snoring right next to him, all he can think is, Well, shit, but the worst part is he's not even surprised.
