Warning: recent Sasuke relationship, Beatles cover band, rusty writing
____________________________________________________________
“Damnit! Fucking Sasuke…” Naruto muttered to himself, hands fisted as if they could mute the pain in his chest as he stomped along the sidewalk. Another day, another fight with Sasuke-and, damn, but that boy had really cut into him this time with his scathing tongue. Sasuke always knew, worse than physically hurting him, what really got to Naruto were his words.
This wasn’t normal, was it? Before, he’d always thought this intensity between them was a good thing; chemistry. Instead, he was starting to realize, what it actually meant was that whenever they came together, explosions happened-and not the good kind.
Naruto frowned at this thought, an indignant voice niggling in the back of his mind. Okay, the sex was great, and the makeup sex was pretty much out of this world, but… But Sasuke was such an asshole that wouldn’t let go of any slight or grudge, and Naruto was so stubborn in the face of Sasuke’s ire that he refused to apologize when he knew he wasn’t in the wrong. So they actually didn’t have “makeup sex” as often as the number of fights they had would suggest. Besides, shouldn’t there be more to their relationship than just great sex?
Naruto’s steps slowed, his internal dialogue seeming to weigh him down more the further he traveled down the path leading away from pure anger and towards the dark abyss of self-loathing.
He’d given up Kakashi for this? At the time, it had seemed like the right thing. Sasuke had come back, and Naruto had missed him-loved him-and Kakashi had helped him forget for a little bit, but they both had known, in his heart, he was Sasuke’s. And Sasuke had come back…maybe not so much professing his feelings the same way, but Naruto had known that’s what he meant… Naruto scoffed at himself now. Right. Because everyone knew the best way to show you cared was by treating your boyfriend like shit…
Naruto refused to acknowledge the breath he exhaled then as a sigh.
Kakashi had never treated him like that, even the few times they’d argued. And sure, Kakashi was a lot older than him, but that hadn’t really taken much time to get past. Whenever it was brought up, it was usually a playful tease.
“Ahh~! So young, you don’t even know these songs!” Kakashi would say with affected chagrin, mismatched eyes twinkling up at Naruto as he rested his fingers on the strings of his guitar.
“Shut up, old man!” Naruto would retort, unable to keep the laugh completely out of his voice as he stomped further into the room. “Even you weren’t alive when this song was written,” he paused, eyebrows screwing together as he thought about it thoroughly, “were you?”
Kakashi chuckled, fingers leaving the frets in favor of Naruto’s unused belt loop, and Naruto’s heart sped up, as it always did, in anticipation of Kakashi’s kiss. His eyelids fell shut of their own volition, and so he heard Kakashi’s teasing expression before he saw it, when Kakashi merely pulled him down to sit beside him, hip to hip, and bridged his guitar across their laps. Disappointment didn’t have much time to bloom, however, before he felt Kakashi’s lips against his neck, followed by warm, moist breath.
“Come on, baby, I’ll teach you…”
Naruto shook his head involuntarily as a loud rustle brought him out of his thoughts. He looked around him, suddenly realizing he’d actually stopped walking, and saw what had made the noise: the myriad of posters papering the wall outside a club, several with corners loose or curled from age and weather, were catching the breeze that had just picked up. Beyond that, he realized he could also hear the buzz of chatter coming from the line of people waiting outside the actual door to the club, further down the street.

The Eggmen: a Beatles Tribute
Featuring:
Hatake Kakashi
There was more after that, listing the names of the rest of the band, of course. Naruto even knew them-Asuma, Tenzou, and his friend Shikamaru, who’d taken up the bass when Asuma had challenged him one fateful day over a shougi board. All of it blurred away, though, leaving Naruto to see Kakashi’s name in big, bold letters, today’s date floating underneath as his heart hammered away inside his chest.
Naruto had never really believed in fate, but his gut was telling him this was a sign he couldn’t ignore.
He jogged quickly over to the line, and was never so grateful in his life to know the bouncer from seeing The Eggmen perform in the past. The guy waved Naruto through with a nod and smile of recognition, and seconds later the chill of the night air was replaced by a near-stifling humidity of bodies and an almost tangible buzz of excitement as the final verse of “With a Little Help from My Friends” filled the room beyond the bar.
Once again, Naruto got the V.I.P. treatment, this time by someone he actually knew. Anko stood outside the entrance to the concert area, smirking sideways at him almost ferally as she let him through, and Naruto wasn’t sure he even wanted to decipher its meaning as he skirted around her and into the cavernous room. He thought she might have called out something to his back, but he couldn’t hear it above the music and the chorus of 200 voices singing along with The Eggmen as they finished out the song.
Faced with the thick crowd, Naruto didn’t know how he was going to make it all the way to the front, let alone backstage, without unintentionally hurting someone in the process. Then a strobe light flashed, and when Naruto’s vision cleared, he realized a thin path was being created down the near-center of the room. The next thing he noticed-a bit belatedly-was that one of the spotlights that was meant to be pointing at the stage was pointing at him, instead. He squinted into the light, shielding his eyes with a hand and letting his gaze drop to the stage, only to have his breath catch when he was met with a stare from mismatched eyes so intense he could practically feel it even from this far away.
For a moment, Naruto thought he might never breathe again, but then Kakashi turned away, making some kind of signal to the other guys on stage. Kakashi’s eyes turned back to Naruto quickly, but this time Naruto was still able to breath, though a bit faster than necessary. Then the first, slow chords started up, seeming to echo despite the crowd, everyone eerily silent as they watched Naruto and Kakashi watching each other. Naruto didn’t recognize the tune at first; it wasn’t one of the songs Kakashi usually performed, but then Kakashi started to sing, and Naruto gasped in realization.
That boy took my love away,
He'll regret it someday,
Naruto had never been great with English, and since Kakashi hadn’t really played this song much, he didn’t know all the meanings of the words. But that much he’d understood. And Kakashi had said ‘my love’-sung it, to him.
But this boy wants you back again.
Without noticing, Naruto began to walk closer, the lyrics resonating in his heart despite the language barrier, pulling him to Kakashi.
That boy isn't good for you,
Tho' he may want you too,
This boy wants you back again.
Naruto felt a prickle behind his nose and eyes, unable to completely blame it on the bright stage lights, as they’d been dimmed to blue for ambience. He bit his lip, trying to stop its quivering, and refused to take his eyes off Kakashi, even to blink.
Oh, and this boy would be happy,
Just to love you, but oh my-yi-yi-yi,
Kakashi’s voice cracked, endearingly, with emotion as he wrung out the verse. Naruto released his lip to swallow the lump in his throat, vision blurring slightly as the prickle behind his eyes increased.
That boy won't be happy,
Till he's seen you cry-hi-hi-hi.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” a familiar female voice intoned from a surprisingly close distance.
Before Naruto had a chance to register that Sakura had pushed her way through the crowd to get to his side, she was already dragging him ahead and through a door almost hidden in the black of the walls to one side. The slightly muffled sound and the sudden brightness of the hallway made Naruto feel off-balance for a moment, but recovered quickly, not wanting to miss a moment more of Kakashi singing to him. He allowed Sakura to lead him for a mere beat longer, then his memory of past performances, when he watched and cheered from backstage, finally took over.
This boy wouldn't mind the pain,
Would always feel the same,
Then he was there, on the darkened backstage, watching Kakashi’s profile as he started the final verse. Naruto’s heart clenched momentarily, wondering if Kakashi knew where he’d gone; why he wasn’t there in the crowd anymore. Wondering if Kakashi was looking for him, or if he’d been able to see it was Sakura who’d pulled him away.
If this boy gets you back again.
Then Kakashi turned slightly, and Naruto was sure that quirk of a smile was meant for him.
This boy.
Naruto stepped closer, as close as he could get without the audience seeing him, yearning to close the distance between himself and the man he never should have left.
This boy.
It was like each slowly-plucked note was taunting him, dragging the song out as long as possible, until Naruto felt like an overtightened string, ready to snap.
This boy.
The song was over-finally-its bittersweetness settling like a blanket over the crowd, but Naruto suddenly felt quite the opposite of bittersweet as Kakashi excused himself for a five-minute break, walking towards where Naruto stood.
And then, in the pale blue glow of the backstage walk lights, Naruto grabbed his tie and kissed him, a flood of memory and feeling filling him, tightening his hold and increasing his urgency. Kakashi returned the kiss with equal fervor, but then the heat was tempered with tenderness, and a moment later he pulled away.
Naruto held fast to him, eyes wide and pleading and sorrowful, unable to hide his every emotion from this man. Kakashi cupped his face, thumb smoothing away forgotten tears as he kissed Naruto one more, sweet time.
“Do I get you back again?” he asked in a light tone belied by the tightness of worry around his eyes.
Naruto took a breath and gave a soft, relieved laugh. “Happy just to love me?” he asked with the hint of a smirk.
Kakashi’s worry melted away to be replaced by a much more familiar lascivious grin. “Well, maybe not just.”
