The days were all becoming the same to Kureno. Get up, coffee, exercise (those two not in any particular order), clean up and get dressed, have breakfast (if he felt like it), then head to the academy for another several mindless hours of floor scrubbing and pre-adolescent egos; afterwards a hard drink, maybe dinner or a grocery store for what's to become dinner or maybe just no dinner at all, then a night spent as alone as possible. His thoughts kept him company enough. Sometimes he'd think about his team and his friends, other times about his choices, his past, his father, his job... Unavoidably he'd think about Asuka, except for the nights where he very deliberately didn't. Eventually he'd sleep, and eventually he'd wake up and do it all over again. One after another, sunrise, sunset, with up to six months worth the repetition had been ingrained to the point of leaving practically no thought to much else.
It was for that reason they were able to catch him off-guard. It was for that reason that Kureno forgot what day it was for the first time in years.
"There he is!! We've found him! Quick, spread the word!! We've actually found him this year!"
"Oh my, I can't believe we actually got to--! Is he not wearing a shirt?"
"It's a tanktop."
"Who cares?! Where's my camera?!!"
"Kureno-san, please accept this gift I made for you!!"
"Kureno-san, I-I've always watched you. I want you to know I still stand beside you! I-I even lo--!"
"GO OUT WITH ME!!"
"NO, ME!"
"Get out of the way, I was here first!!"
"Did you just get a picture? I WANT COPIES!!"
Kureno didn't take a second to wonder why these people were standing in his yard at 6 AM, interrupting his morning routine. He didn't even blink and stall to wait for his brain to connect the date to their motive. He just did the very first thing his instincts screamed at him to do.
He RAN.
"No, he's trying to get away!!"
"Stop him!"
"Kureno-san, WAIT!"
The next three hours were spent doing much more dodging and maneuvering than he cared for but it could hardly be helped. Normally each year he'd have gotten his head-start the night before (if not sooner), giving himself plenty of time to leave false clues and cover his tracks. But he was unprepared today which made it much easier to tail him (damn kunoichi) and it took him half the morning to take a strong enough lead where he felt he could shake them so long as he could think of a place no one would look for him, or a place where no one would dare bother him. Almost immediately one such place came to mind. It took him another half hour--and a rather frightening proposition later--to lose enough hope to try it.
He wasn't sure if Asuka was home or not, but he still had her key (he kept "forgetting" to throw it out). Kureno couldn't bring himself to actually use it however, not after everything that had happened between them; not after their trust had been so shaken... So instead he knocked rather desperately, glancing over his shoulder with no small amount of paranoia. They were gaining...he could feel it--
"I think he went down here!"
"Spread out and look!"
Shaken trust be damned, he was using the key.
A frantic twist and turn later and Kureno slipped inside the home, slamming the door shut behind him like a man trying to keep out a wild animal.
