I don't blame you about joining up with people you don't know.
Suddenly, anecdotes:
I used to play Runescape a lot, until I made myself quit because I was wasting too much time on it, lol. Grind-tastic, but very solo-friendly, which I liked, since I just...prefer playing alone? I've seen people on game boards berate people for wanting to play largely alone on MMOs, asking what's the point, and why don't they just play regular, single-player games, but I enjoyed myself, and I enjoyed the world. We didn't really get into parties and tackle things together, but I mainly started playing because a friend insisted. We could chat while doing our own, individual things, so it was fun.
That was actually the first MMO I'd ever played, and though I eventually stopped, I like looking at new ones to see if they're at all interesting looking, but it always seems like the vast majority of them are not really very solo-friendly, or too focused on PvP over PvE, and it's not like I have a bunch of friends to begin with, much less ones who're likely to even enjoy playing MMOs anyway, so I just end up never start playing any new ones. /rambly
