Normally I would be tired now, but I had a nap earlier this evening (and dreamed of Karkat sending me suicidal texts on MSN and crashing my PC for some godforsaken reason) so I'm wide awake. This bodes ill for tomorrow.
My sister recently acquired Robin McKinley's Pegasus from the library. I used to love that author so I'm a little sad to say that the book was disappointing. It read like a cross between fanfic and Brightly Burning, Mercedes Lackey's epic tragedy in which a teenager falls in love with his horse. (As you can tell from the title, that one ended badly.) The heroine is a nerdy princess named Sylvaniiel, she has a destined meeting with a black pegasus named Ebon, everyone is very nice and understanding except for the villain, etc etc. I hate fantasy novels like GRRM's A Game of Thrones where everything is muddy and gruesome for the sake of it, but this swings the pendulum a bit too far the other way. Put in some comedy, some tension, some satiric footnotes, anything!
The biggest problem, though, is that McKinley apparently sent the manuscript to the publisher with the last three chapters missing, since the book literally ends where it should begin - when the conflict starts.
Maybe I'm just too old and I would have been crazy for it when I was twelve, who knows. Although I was never really interested in stories about magic ponies, even artistic magic talking ponies with wings. Anyway, apparently a sequel is coming out.
