Lately I keep wondering when the lunatic fringe will finally drive me out of game/comic fandom. The moe industry keeps going further and further in search of the next trend that will drive sales (it's not a coincidence that the number of "otoko no ko" characters has increased significantly lately). You can now buy official licenses to marry your favourite anime character!
Not to knock other people's entertainment, and I know many fans don't mean these things seriously, but this doesn't seem like a very healthy activity to me. Or for instance consider the whole uproar over Idolmaster 2. Fans of the first game are so angry that some characters are no longer playable and that some male characters have been added that people are snapping their discs in half, punching holes in walls, giving the game 1 star on Amazon, etc... It's like when Hirano Aya got death threats for saying she was in a relationship on TV or when 2ch went on a rampage because the author of Kannagi mentioned that the heroine might have had a previous boyfriend.
Excuse me but this is SCARY! I can understand being irritated at a game for cutting features or whatever, but this kind of sheer fury is just disturbing. Not only are people disconnected from reality, there's also an intense streak of misogyny involved in it. Women who are not virgins are sluts and deserve whatever they get. What is this, Iran?
But what's worse is that this kind of overreaction is a group activity. It's not just one lunatic on 2ch but a whole stream of them. People wouldn't post such pictures on the internet if they didn't get some sort of positive reinforcement out of it. They're egging each other on to see who can be the angriest. It's like a whole subculture is sliding off a cliff. Hey guys! Did you enjoy the period a few years ago when everyone thought anime fans were closet perverts? Because it's going to come back if you idiots keep this up.
I guess I should just keep reading the stuff I like and ignore the rest :/
