Robotics in Minimally Invasive Medical Procedures

Aug 29, 2011 13:53

just read another interesting journal from JPOG about the use of robots! No, if you're imagining a human-like robot which can move around, it's not the robot that i mean. Robotics have been used in medicine lately to assist the doctor, the first robot generation ever used in medicine are called PUMA (for stereotactic brain biopsy), Probot (assisting TURP) and Robodoc (used for orthopaedic surgery). These robots only consist of one arm if i'm not mistaken.

well, fast forward to present, i'm amazed to read the new development about the use of these robots. there have been various studies to develop the ultimate robo-assistant which can mimic human's movement as close as possible (like the seven degrees of freedom of articulating instruments a.k.a. the way the surgeon moves their hand joints while handling the surgical instrument). lack of tactile respons is an obvious problem if we use this robo arm since no matter how good this mechanical arm is, it's not the surgeon's hand. a big problem for someone who relies on his/her sense of touch while performing an operation. but it's still AWSOME to duplicate that movement smoothly!

i'm dying to see how the medical world would change after the use of robotics in medical procedures gains more popularity world wide.
