So a while back there was a woman at my school, talking about women and Islam. She was basically discussing certain misogynic texts in the Quran and putting them in their historical context, making them seem much less misogynic in the process. It was all very interesting and I'm looking forward to her next lecture, where she will be talking about veiling and honour killing. People like her are needed in our schools, since I'm certain she successfully managed to crush some people's prejudices about Muslims and Islam during that hour. Heaven knows the media isn't helping in that department.
It saddens me, though, that in order to strengthen women's position, she seemed to feel the need to lessen men's. The Islamic rule of no female imams and women only being allowed in the back of the mosque? She explained that with all men being sex freaks who cannot look at a woman without having impure thoughts. Women on the other hand, according to her, have better self-control due to their "carrying the creation in their wombs". Not only is it degenerating towards men, it also brings us back to the old way of thinking that it's the woman who is responsible for the man's sexuality, and therefore it makes it her fault if a man desires her, hits on her, rapes her... It just makes me sad that this way of reasoning isn't more frowned upon in today's oh-so-equal society. But that's really a whole other discussion.
