A chuckle

At a dinner party last night of girlfriends new and old, I was requested to tell the story, yet again, of my absurdly disastrous Greyhound trip to Miami almost two years ago. My absurdly disastrous trip, in which I impulsively decided to take a 46 hour bus to the city where my recently-exed-boyfriend happened to be vacationing, in lieu of hopping ( Read more... )

Confession: do you remember when I abruptly left for New York for four days in 2004? It was to pursue a guy I was convinced was my soulmate...even though we had never met! (don't ask, it's a looong story)

Sorry I've been out of touch -- I still don't have Internet yet in my apartment. I hope you are doing well in Montreal!

(BTW, what do you know about Madrid, and is it worth spending oodles of money visiting?)

i've heard mixed things about madrid - the museum is worth a trip, but the city itself sounds more like a place to pass through for a night or two on your way from one cool spanish town to another, as part of a two-week tour.

Gotcha. Madrid can wait. Instead, I'm going to the south of France. Toulouse, Nimes, Avignon, Marseille et Aix-en-Provence, j'y viens!

Aix is kinda cool, if smallish. Avignon is all walled and pretty - and I think that's where the Amphitheatre is? The Amphitheatre is sweet and so is that Roman aquaduct... I feel like both of those things are in the same Avignon-related vacinity. But from my own memories, Nimes is dullsville. Go to Nice! So beautiful! Best ice cream ever! Swim in the sea! (I did it in March and nearly lost all gender.)

So glad to hear that my arbitrary decision-making is sound. I don't have enough vacation days, so I opted to skip Nimes in favour of Avignon. I've already been to Nice, but I do want to go back later in May.

What is Marseille like? Some tell me that it's a dirty, dangerous Sin City, while others say that it's an eclectic piece of North Africa in France. Maybe both?

this was supposed to be a sentimental post about the lengths we go to for love. these comments are supposed to be empathetic, emotionally-charged admissions of similar passions. not making effin' travel plans on MY watch.

bah.

yeah, nimes sucks. i did an exchange in grade nine with a girl in Arles. Arles is also really pretty, quaint and touristy, but it's small. worth a detour though, i'd say.
i'm still friends with the girl - she lives in paris now. i can hook y'all up it you'd like. she's a sorbonne student, and uber-chique and cool.

Oh yeah. I love uber-chic girls. Will she love me, though? I feel so unfashionable and unworthy around Parisians.

madrid is fantastic... way more beautiful and hip than you'd expect of a city that's next to but not barcelona. book yourself a suite at the mad-something hostel, go to the indian restaurant (not that one, the one further down) one street over, get a menu del diaz, flirt with the waiter, and tell 'em Tamar says hi.
