I... don't really know where that came from? I guess I was just thinking about how a repressed culture sort of deteriorates but then when it gets unrepressed he develops, and maybe the wildness the Pevensies see when they get to Narnia is a temporary stage, a phase of cultural development. Like how in PC they turn into dumb beasts because they're treated like it, well under the witch the same sort of thing would happen I think, but only 100 years' worth instead of 1300 years. So maybe it's a natural development, rationalization, or maybe it's induced by the concepts of civilization the Pevensies brought with them and employed in ruling their kingdom. Either way, the only constant is change, and even in the Golden Age Peter misses it.

Yeah, clearly Golden Age for Lewis has nothing to do with mechanization and industry but it's kind of the model we've got... progress, ho. Yessssss all the best things are necessarily from the past, like what you were saying about myth from your class :D and then he threw in some homey touches like Mrs Beaver's sewing machine and jam and sugar, whatever, as long as it caters to the English child's imagination and palate.

I am le ignorant and know nothing about the opium wars. tbh all my real history knowledge falls under US and Latin America; the rest is picked up at random.

Childhood straight to death - you're right, that is weird. I suppose he's saving them from it? Lewis has little regard for maturity and adults, or most adults anyway. Parents are pretty much absent, and when they talk about someone's parents it's Harold and Alberta who are progressive nuts. I understand he's writing for children and so poo-pooing adults of course appeals to his audience, but it seems excessive. then again he hardly wrote Matilda, right.

Yeah, somehow everything Harold and Alberta do is bad. like teetotaling. I remember having to ask my mom what that meant. but seriously, Lewis? seriously? he might as well come out and go "pshhhh, liberals!"

Possibly why she became my favorite character once the LWW film came out. I dunno, all her "failings" in that movie I just totally identify with. oh, Susan. <3
