Possible Spoilers/Warnings: Post LWW, Lucy/Tumnus friendship fic, not a shipping one.
Summary: Lucy and Mister Tumnus discuss what to do if Lucy ever left to go back to her old home.
AN: This isn’t a shipping fic, something sweet. If you’re wondering, in the pocket companion to Narnia, it was said that CS Lewis didn’t like bugs so he didn’t put any in Narnia. I just thought I could put a little tidbit like that in the fic. Anyways, this was for the Narniaficexchange. Enjoy!
Impossible Question
Lucy was beginning to find leisure in the new life she had been living for years now. The youngest Pevensie felt more like a Narnian as each day passed. At fourteen years old, Lucy woke up every morning bright and early to watch the flowers bloom. In England she could never observe the sunrise because she had to sleep for school or she was too tired from studying. As a Queen of Narnia, she could dig her hands in the dirt and feel the world pulsing in between her fingers without feeling disgusted.
After a careful search two years ago, when everyone was first growing accustomed to ruling a land, the siblings had found no bugs in Narnia, which was a definite relief for the two sisters.
During these mornings, rain or shine, Lucy usually found Mister Tumnus up playing his pipes. The music always sounded soft and calming, a sharp contrast from the sound of cars bustling in England and people yelling for others to hurry up. The trees seemed to sway to the music, even when Lucy would stop her friend and they would take their daily stroll, as they did every morning. The two had just planted an orchard of apples only a few days ago and the conversation always seemed to turn to how much apples would grow and how delicious they would eventually taste.
Lucy held her hands together, breathing in the scents with Tumnus walking beside her.
“Are you finding yourself accustomed to Narnia milady?” The faun asked, to which Lucy hid a smirk, shaking her head.
“Mister Tumnus, you are my best friend here. I may be a queen now, but you still must call me Lucy.”
“As soon as you stop referring to me as Mister Tumnus.”
Lucy let out a laugh, pausing as she thought about the answer to the original question. “I am used to this place. Better than before that is. Once in awhile I may start to remember England. The memories never really seem as fantastic as my life here.”
Tumnus nodded, satisfied with the answer. “Ah, that is good then.”
“I may want to go back someday. I did still abandon the place I had always lived my life. And there is mother…” Lucy added.
She trailed off and they were left with silence, both lost in thought. A minute or two passed and the girl glanced toward her friend, noticing then that Tumnus the Faun seemed very sad. His ears drooped and his eyes were focused on the ground in front of him.
“Mister Tumnus, are you all right?”
He looked back up. There was no use in pretending that he was not upset, for he surely showed it. “Of all of the humans I have met, you are my closest friend. Your siblings are of course delightful, there is nothing wrong with them. But you, Lucy… you are definitely a closer friend to me-“
“It’s all right, I know what you mean.” She gave him a sincere smile. “You are definitely my best friend here too.”
“I just do not really know what I would do without you. If you ever did decide to leave, what would I do to help me remember you by?” His eyes were almost pleading, eyebrows raised.
“You can name a shrub after me!” Lucy’s smile grew, her cheeks brightening with the joke. “But it should be something prickly and hard to eradicate.”
Mister Tumnus smiled, and broke into a laugh, unable to contain it. Lucy always knew how to make him happy. She would always be a cherished friend to him.
“But you still shouldn’t be so sad Mister Tumnus. I do not think I will honestly be leaving anytime soon. Narnia is definitely my home now.”
Lucy ended the conversation with a smile and with that, Tumnus’s hopes came back. He was sure she was right. After all, who would want to leave Narnia anyways? Besides having themselves named after a shrub, which was what many people would want in their lives, no doubt.
The walk went on along the beach, as the sun began to make its way into the sky. The colours went from pink, purple, and orange to its regular bright blue in no time. Lucy glanced back to where the forest had led out to the sea and changed the subject.
The two never went all the way around the beach, although the siblings had ridden all around one day to help them figure out where they were living. It was a long trek, but it was worth it. As the two spoke about the orchard and Narnia weather and how it was different from England’s, they quickly turned and went back around as they always did.
The lingering question stuck in both of their minds, but they chose not to say anything. The Pevensies going back to England? It was a silly thought. They were kings and queens now, they needed to take care of a whole land, filled with all kinds of creatures. As their conversation changed from one thing to another, Lucy knew that Mister Tumnus would not forget about what she said before.
Narnia surely was her home now, there was no doubt about it. Susan, Edmund, and Peter (especially Peter) were now adapted to this new life as royalty. At first all of them had thought it was a dream when the crowns were neatly placed onto their heads.
The battle with the White Witch and her army still lived long in their memories.
Lucy and Tumnus finally arrived back at the castle and it felt like it always did whenever she walked through the long archway to the main hall. The designs and curves were always so mesmerizing and beautiful, it never ceased to take her breath away. She could live here for years and never get used to this.
They found Susan in the stables, pulling herself onto a Horse named Margerie. She let out a laugh from a joke that the beast had made, just as Lucy approached them.
“Oh, hullo Lucy, Mister Tumnus…” Susan smiled, as she started walking with Margerie.
“Trying to get away before I finished my walk?” Lucy smiled back.
“Of course not, come along.”
When Lucy was finished readying a Horse named Robert, she left Mister Tumnus with a quick hug and started riding down a path in the castle’s courtyard with her sister.
“Peter and Edmund are still asleep. They love it here, you know… they seem to have already forgotten England, but they are still boys. Even the High King sleeps later than his sisters.” Susan began, chuckling to herself.
Lucy returned it with a giggle, but it only brought her mind back to her conversation with Tumnus. She knew she had to talk to her sister about it. “You… do miss England though, don’t you Susan?”
“Why yes, of course. That’s where mother and father are and all my old friends. England is so bothersome but it was my first home. Why do you ask?”
Lucy shook her head. “No reason. I was just curious.”
