Susan sat on her throne and ran her hand against the cold arm of the chair. On any other day, this would be a comfort to her stressed mind, but today, it would not help her in any way. She leaned back against the throne, and closed her eyes for a moment, imagining the day of the coronation.

But thinking of that day only reminded her of Edmund. His look of wonder as he walked down the aisle had made her smile. When Aslan had announced him as King Edmund the Just, she had grinned more than she ever had before. She was so proud of her younger brother.

A noise made her open her eyes suddenly. It was just General Oreius coming in through the door. Susan rose from her seat, as if from instinct. “General,” she said, nodding to the centaur.

“My Queen,” he replied, bowing gracefully. “I bring news of your brother, King Edmund.”

Inside, Susan shook. She did not wish to hear the news, but it had to come. On the outside, her eyes only betrayed her thoughts for a moment. “Yes, General,” she said with as much strength as she could muster. “What news from the front?”

“Of course, My Queen,” replied Oreius. He looked down toward the ground. “My Queen...” He could not continue.

“What is it, Oreius?” asked Susan. “What is wrong?” she continued, seeing his look of sadness.

“Your brother has been wounded, My Queen,” said Oreius, lifting his head. “He lies near death, and your sister is nowhere to be found.”

Susan sank back into her chair. Her breathing grew shallow, and she put her hand to her chest. She could not speak for a moment. She closed her eyes, and tried to put the thought of Edmund wounded out of her head.

“My Queen?” the centaur spoke after a moment. “Do you know where the Queen Lucy is?”

Susan nodded slowly. “She is visiting Tumnus, in Western Woods. You’ll find her there.”

Oreius slowly approached the Queen. She was seated on the throne, her hand on her chest, her breathing rapid and shallow, and her eyes shut. “Would you bid me send another, that I might stay here with you?” asked Oreius, unsure of what she would say.

Susan opened her eyes, and stood up. “No, General,” she said. “Go, find Lucy, save Edmund.” She shook her head. “Please, Oreius,” she added, using the centaur’s real name. “Just go.”

“Yes, My Queen,” said Oreius. He nodded, and then turned to go. “Are you certain?” he added.

“Go, General,” said Susan. The centaur nodded again, and left the room.

Edmund, thought Susan. Oh, please, dear Aslan, let him live. Let him be all right...
