So. Here's the entry on my time in Nova Scotia.
I arrived on July 15th. We spent the first two nights getting to know the whole group, camping at Five Islands Provincial Park, and learning about the Triassic/Jurassic rocks on the islands. After that, we went to St. Frances Xavier in Antigonish and spent a few nights there and looked at the Devonian rocks the sed/paleo group was studying.
Later, my group went off to the Atlantic coast to start studying our rocks and so on and so on. In the middle of our trip, we took a two day "vacation" to Prince Edward Island, which was beautiful!
My group spent most of its time camping at Peggy's Cove, NS, which is on St. Margaret's Bay - also very beautiful. It was so nice working on the coast with the cool breeze constantly coming in and cold nights. So very different from Texas and I loved it!
Last Tuesday, we finished packing up our camp for the last time and waited for the other group to join us and see our rocks. When we did take them to the outcrop, we were stupid and left our bags and things in the vans while we were out. It was less than an hour, but thieves managed to break into our vans (without breaking anything else in the process, amazingly), steal a few things from most people and two backpacks (including mine and everything in it - camera, field notebook, journal, etc.), and run off.
The mounties were really friendly, but we were so shaken up by it. It really makes one feel so violated... Anyway, that evening, we went to the dorms in Dalhousie University in Halifax. The next morning, I went to the U.S. Consolate to get papers saying I'd lost my passport and IDs and that I am a citizen, so I shouldn't have any trouble getting home. My dad did a lot of work to make it easy for me when I went to them. Later that afternoon, I dragged my group back out into the field to get some more information for me to use since I'd lost my notebook. I felt bad doing it, but they didn't seem to mind too much.
So we got a little more data for me (though I still don't feel like it's enough yet) and then compiled a little of it on Thursday, sent off our rock samples to our respective schools, and toured Halifax a little. We had a nice big group dinner and then went back to pack up.
Friday's a bit of a longer tale, what with the airport stuff and all that. Although, I'm glad to say I didn't have to go through a lot of trouble to get home without a passport or ID. The Canadian people were very reassuring and helpful. It was really just the U.S. people I was worried about. >.> But things went okay and I finally reached home.
Overall, my trip was fun and intense and I met and made some great friends. I'm glad I went and had the experience.
If you'd like more details, comment/e-mail/IM me and I'll give them to you!
