Still boycotting part II

Jun 22, 2010 22:30

So I know I've been posting a lot, but I just have the rageeeeeeee.

I've been (re)reading more articles and blogs and such, and there's a lot of people who see nothing wrong with the casting.  in fact, from Derek Kirk Kim's old blog post:

"You do realize that the characters in Avatar aren't necessarily Asian, right? They just live in a world where the cultures mimic certain medieval Asian cultures. Aang and the other could be of any so-called "race"."

The same could be said for Lord of the Rings- they live in a culture that mimics medieval European cultures, so, naturally, every character in that world is white. But by the comment's logic, it could've and should've been any race! I mean, shit, even the non humans were white. Oh my god, a young Takeshi Kaneshiro as the elf would've been amazing! (I'm serious) If some asian or black character was in there, you'd bet people would call it out. In fact, watching Merlin, the BBC show has several black characters, and I saw many comments (... youtube and hulu comments but comments nonetheless) about how weird/not historical that is, but most deal with it because it's about magic and is fake anyway, whatevs.

I fucking hate, hate, hate the 'excuse' that the casting was okay since the world is 'made up.'

Is that not like, the most ambiguously racial thing you've ever seen? Goddamn it, for some reason, it just makes me want to eat some potatoes and corned beef. Look at them all, not being specifically Asian. Look at that. Any race could be doing that. In front of a Chinese style screen. While kneeling on the floor. While wearing Asian inspired clothes. Not necessarily Asian at all!

Fuck you guys.

race, angry
