A few days ago, March 28 came and went. That was the one year mark of my graduation from college.
The greatest (and worst) thing about finally being free from the clutches of school is probably all the free time you have. I remember telling a friend of mine that all this spare time I have is a blessing because I get to really fill my time with all the things I really want to (like pursuing and applying for a Masters scholarship, volunteering for church, spending more time with God, writing, reading, catching up with friends, earning money doing things I'd do for free, etc), but at the same time, it can be a trap for the bum life. It's a time for idleness to breed, which is something I really wouldn't recommend.
I just recently finished reading Do Hard Things by the Harris twins, Alex & Brett Harris. In a nutshell, this book is all about a very simple idea: Rebelling against low expectations.
It's about creating a godly counterculture that realizes the potential of young people for God's glory. It's about stepping up to the plate and understanding that being a teenager is not about having a vacation from responsibility and character development. Being young is about training yourself, it's about pursuing growth. This book expects more from you than you probably expect from yourself.
I liked it a lot because it's not just a pep talk in a form of a 250-paged book. The authors themselves are living, breathing testimonies to this mindset that requires action. It makes the book a lot more concrete. It doesn't stay theoretical.
Alex and Brett Harris are now 21 years old, and they're coming to the Philippines for the first time. The DO HARD THINGS conference will be reaching Manila and Cebu this June 2010. Guess what? Young people are organizing this event. Young people are mobilizing and going out of their comfort zones to see this event take place. Volunteers are required to be ages 21 and below.
If you're within the age range and want to do something that will make a lasting difference in people's lives - not just in yours - then go ahead --
do hard things.
