The “Yattering and Jack” has always been my favorite of Clive Barker’s tales. The bureaucratic mediocrity of the demon world slamming into the mediocrity of the “real” world leads to hilarity. You said "The Yattering is totally they cutest, most pathetic monster we’ve seen yet in our class." I couldn't have said it better myself. As a matter of fact Polo felt more like a monster to me. I felt bad for the Yattering and its plight.

I felt bad for the Yattering, too, but I really liked the story a lot. It was a nice twist to have Jack turn on him. I just loved the sense of frustration throughout the whole thing. By the way, I can't see your picture of the Yattering!!

I think that's how Barker gets us to be on the Yattering's side. If he was making progress against Jack, then we'd root for Jack because he's the underdog, but since Yattering is, then we root for him.

I also pictured the Yattering as cute. Just couldn't help it - poor little guy. He doesn't even have the choice on how he wants to live his life; goes from one slave owner to another!
