As part of my teaching class for SHU I need to make a CV (curriculum vitae aka teaching resume), write an application letter to a place I might teach, and write a statement of teaching philosophy.
I think I’d like to try teaching some manner of life-long learning, or community ed course this fall, just to get my teaching feathers wet in some capacity. I know UVM is affiliated with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, which does classes for old folks, and I would imagine CCV does something to this effect (if anyone knows solid info on this, let me know).
I *think* the average course like this is about six weeks, and I am planning my fantasy short story writing curriculum in my head. This is the list of short stories I’d like to teach/talk about, it kind of grew into a big list for only a six week course:
A Good Man is Hard to Find-Flannery O’Connor
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge-Ambrose Bierce
Hills Like White Elephants-Ernest Hemingway
Rocking-Horse Winner-D.H. Lawrence
The Yellow Wallpaper-Charlotte Perkins Gilman
To Build a Fire-Jack London
The Most Dangerous Game-Richard Connell
Harrison Bergeron-Kurt Vonnegut
The Lottery-Shirley Jackson
The Lesson-Toni Cade Bambara
(This website features them all, and more, it was a neat site that brought me back to some stories I haven’t thought about in years
http://www.moonstar.com/~acpjr/Blackboard/Common/Stories/1ListOfShortStories.html.)
I was thinking one short story plus one student story (15 page maximum) per week (I hope it’s a small class, I guess I’d have to modify my time management based on the number of students). Exciting stuff, definitely fun for me to revisit some of these stories.
