Haters to the Left Airlock

I want to start off with a little explanation about myself. See, I have this love / hate relationship with critics. On the one hand, I completely understand why they are necessary, both for audiences and showrunners alike. However, I also think criticism is a huge problem. I don't mean literary criticism when I say " ( Read more... )

Yeah, this is going to be a super long comment. You've been warned! (But I know you love it.)

1. On Reviewing
It was right after the 2nd season of The Office ended that I realized I could no longer just sit down and watch my show and love it completely. There was analysis and speculation with fellow office geeks. It wasn't fun for me to watch it anymore because I was tense the whole time, waiting to see what was going to happen. Mostly because of Jim and Pam, but for other reasons, too. This doesn't happen so much anymore because the show's lacking a specific drive, but I'll save that for my blog. :) Anyhow, us tv fanatics look at television at a very different way than other people and I love that. I do hate it when reviewers criticize just for the sake of criticizing and I try not to do that. However, it does make enjoying the really good parts SO MUCH BETTER and I feel sad for the casual viewers that don't get to experience that.

2. On No Exit
OMG, when the whole thing was over, I was in a daze, like "What the frak just happened there?" I've read a ton of recaps and I think I'm finally just starting to get a handle on what happened there. And I definitely agree with you and Craig about Ellen Tigh. SUCH a great character even though I used to despise her. I'm still confused about the Centurions and the One True God, but what she was saying about free will and love and all that was just another awesome/creepy instance of Cylon theology and Mormon theology lining up. I also had the same thoughts that #7 was Starbuck or Caprica and Tigh's baby. The more I think about the more I'm sure about the theory that Daniel is Starbuck's dad. (Also, I'm pretty/way positive Anders is gonna die and I should feel more sad about it, but I don't.) And yeah, I totally called that there was going to be a thirteenth cylon. (13 colonies and 12 cylons just didn't line up.)

3. I can't wait for next week. As much I love exposition as well (those hospital bed-side talks with Dumbledore were also my favorite--this is why we're friends) I'm now ready to get back to the action.

4. If I don't get to be a tv writer, I want to be Mo Ryan when I grow up.

5. John Hodgman was mildly entertaining. He would have worked better as a cameo in the second or third season, though.

6. I'm way excited for Boomer and Galen to hook up again.

7. I missed Baltar this episode. And I'm dying (unfortunate pun) to get back to the Roslin storyline. Loved the double meaning behind Adama's "do whatever it takes to fix our girl."

8. Happy Valentine's Day, Ashley!

Yes, I do love it. Very much.

1. I totally agree that engaging with it is much better than not. You get so much more out of it; that's why I write these stupid things in the first place. But I start getting upset when you're so focused on trying to make it what you think it should be, that you miss what it's actually trying to be. Does that make sense?

2. I wish you could be at my Frak Parties. We talk forever after (and during) about what everything means. I think we stopped it at least three times during this one to clarify what was going on. It was so much fun.

3. BFF forevah.

4. For serious.

5. Yeah, I didn't mind him so much. Just kind of ignored him, to be honest.

6. I KNOW.

7. I am ashamed to say that I missed the double meaning, and now feel ashamed. (Although several reviews I read pointed it out to me, and I was like, ohhhhhh.) Maybe I would have got it if I watched it a second time?

8. Thanks, yo.
