State of the things

It has been one hell of a week, my lovelies.  In some kind of effort to put way more hands-on work into character research than any author ever should, I somehow managed to scratch the hell out of my cornea last week while taking out my contacts, and couldn't look at a computer screen for more than a couple of minutes for three days. See, a rock salt slushie would at least be a story. I managed to jab myself in the eye taking out my contact lenses. I don't even know.

On to the bit! You would ask me the hard questions, wouldn't you.

So, I've been putting off putting too much characterization into Cooper in this story but I do know a few things. He's the favored son of a man known for beating his dogs and his horses and his servants and his wife, and, of course, his younger, less-favored son. Cooper walks some very thin lines.

Right now he's sitting here cursing Blaine in his head, because Blaine should know better. Cooper has spent all morning trying to subtly steer things into everybody getting along, because they need this alliance, and now he's going to have to spend all afternoon making sure his dad doesn't redirect his anger at Blaine into getting hostile with the barbarians. Blaine clearly likes ticking their father off, or he wouldn't do things like this.

Pretty sure he also dislikes Kurt on principle just for making his life harder, but Kurt is a barbarian, he doesn't know any better. Blaine should.

Cooper has to make these bargains, see, look at the bigger picture, and he's never kept Blaine safe. He's been stopping wars and dealing with tax increases and Blaine's safety has to be Blaine's job, because Cooper is dealing with an entire kingdom. It's easier to be annoyed with Blaine for putting himself into danger than it is to figure out some impossible way to fix everything.

(If they survive this war, he might start thinking about arranging a hunting accident himself, again. Maybe the king's girth will slip over a fallen tree. Some stableboy will have to be executed for it, of course, but it will be too late by then.)
