It Was Time
It was time.
The old dwarf took a deep breath, leaning back in his chair. Finally, it was time - he could feel it in his bones and he smiled as relief waved through his body. Finally, it was time.
If many years ago he had been told that he would welcome the death, he, Dwalin, son of Fundin would have laughed into their face. Back in those times everything was different. He was fierce warrior, a member of Thorin Oakenshield’s company which set off on a journey to take back their homeland. Now Erebor was in its golden age, greater than ever; however, Thorin had never got to see it. Even more than a hundred years later, it still hurt Dwalin. At least he will be at his home forever, he thought, as Thorin’s grave was deep inside the mountain and his nephews were buried by his side. Fíli and Kíli who also had fallen in the Battle of Five Armies. They were too young for a death like that.
Then he remembered his brother, Balin, who went to Moria about fifty years after the Battle of Five Armies. He took Óin and Ori with himself, who always wrote long letters to Dwalin, telling about their life there. But all of a sudden those letters stopped. He knew what this meant: his brother and his friend were not alive anymore. However, he could hardly stand the pain he felt when Gimli, Glóin’s son told him what had caused their death.
He felt the salty taste of tears in his mouth as he thought about his late companions. I wonder if I could see you again when this is over.
“I hope so,” he said, then he closed his eyes.
It was time.
