Sleepless
She couldn’t sleep, just kept tossing and turning, letting out an annoyed sigh, because sleep didn’t want to come. She tried to count sheep, but her thoughts always returned to one thing: him.
He was sleeping on the floor in that small storeroom which was separated from the other parts of the house with a curtain. She wanted to offer him the bed, but he kept saying that he couldn’t let her sleep on the floor. Even though, it was Gwen who had asked him to stay there at night. And he did, indeed, stayed, so close to her, yet so far. Sometimes the noblest people are too noble, she thought, rolling onto her right side.
She couldn’t get him out of her head, it didn’t matter how much she wanted to. She tried to think of songs and poems, since those always helped her fall asleep, but this time the only thing she could hear was his breathing, as Camelot was completely silent that night. She turned again to face the curtain that separated him from her, surrendering to her thoughts that were haunting her. She wasn’t bothered because he was sleeping on the floor - it was because he was sleeping without her.
It may not be the most decent thing, she thought, getting out of her bed, with a racing heart. It might have not been the most decent thing, but she couldn’t fight it any more. She tiptoed through the house until arriving to the curtain. She stepped behind it and saw him, lying between the sacks, breathing peacefully. Before she could think about what she was doing, Gwen found herself lying next to him, with her body against his back, putting an arm around him. Resting her head on his shoulder she calmed down; she could finally close her eyes.
