Taemin watched as his foot rolled a small rock back and forth. The pain on his neck was making it almost -almost, impossible to keep looking down but he didn’t dare look up, for he had nothing to look at. Watching the large amount of couples having their couple-fun at the amusement park would do nothing but increase the feeling of emptiness in his chest.
He ignored the laughter, the joyful shouts of children, the whispers, the chirps of birds flying far above his head, everything.
“Look, that boy must have been dumped, what a loser.” He heard someone say, followed by a stifled laugh.
He hoped that with his head facing down people couldn’t see the small smile playing on his lips, because they were right. He was a loser. This was supposed to be a happy, perfect date with his first girlfriend, but the heartless, cruel girl had the guts to break up with him right then and there on their three months anniversary.
What angered him the most was that it was all a lie. Those three months spent with that girl, who was supposed to love him, were all part of a bet. His ex-girlfriend was getting 10 bucks for every week she endured “going-out-with-the-boy-who-was-prettier-than-her”. It was really a silly bet, wasn’t it? Taemin couldn’t believe it when she told him.
“At least she was honest.” Taemin muttered to himself and wondered for how long he had been sitting there. Over two hours, he realized after taking a glance to his cell phone -which reminded him that he would have to delete her number and all things related to her on his cell phone later.
When he was thinking about going home, finally feeling emotionally prepared to face his family and older brother who would ask how his meant-to-be perfect date went; he felt a presence in front of him, blocking out the sun.
He looked up and there… it was, a very tall person dressed as a giant polar bear stood in front of him and what puzzled Taemin the most was that it was handing him a string… A string that led to a light pink, heart-shaped balloon that fluttered calmly over their heads.
“Hm, is it for me?” Taemin asked, feeling dumb for asking such question since the bear was in front of him, with his white fluffy hand almost touching his. The bear nodded with his big smiling head and kept holding the balloon until Taemin took it from his hand.
Taemin stared at his hands, uncertain of what to do now. The bear sat beside him, hands resting on his bear legs while he stared at the boy beside him, head tilted to the side as if asking “what’s the matter?” and Taemin found that so cute, somehow.
In a matter of seconds he found himself telling that big polar bear everything that happened to him that day, and how he felt betrayed and crushed after finding out that he was only part of a bet.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t know what has gotten into me… I kept blabbering here… You should have told me to stop, I must be bothering you.” Taemin said, smiling apologetically and lowering his head. From the corner of his eyes he saw the bear shake his head and suddenly he thought about something. “Aren’t you feeling hot with this outfit, Mr. Bear?”
The bear then lowered his head and Taemin took that as a positive answer, chuckling. “Thank you for everything, Mr. Bear.” He said, giving him a genuine smile, his girlfriend a far thought in his mind.
Taemin couldn’t say he didn’t see it coming. The way the bear put his arms around his shoulders carefully and brought him closer, he was clearly getting hugged by someone dressed as a polar bear in the middle of the amusement park on a sunny Saturday afternoon, he never felt this good with his ex-girlfriend. He ignored the heat and the way the fake fur tickled his skin and hugged him back, never letting go of the light pink balloon above their heads.

“So, Minho, enjoyed your time with that skinny boy?” A brown haired boy asked. he was also dressed as a bear, but his outfit was brown instead of white and his bear head was off while he munched on a cereal bar.
“Actually, I did. thanks for asking, Jonghyun,” the taller boy answered after taking off his polar bear head. He smiled and continued, “His name is Taemin.” He said dreamingly.
“Ew, I hate people in love,” Jonghyun said, throwing the rest of his cereal bar away and trying to reach back for his zipper, wanting to get rid of his outfit as fast as he could.
“W-What? Of course I’m not in-“ He started saying but was cut off by the other boy waving his hand in front of his face.
“Sure, and what was that stuttering just now, hm? Well, whatever, can you give me a hand here? This damn zipper won’t move!”
“Well, if only you were taller, maybe it wouldn’t be so difficult to take off your outfit,” Minho said smirking, walking around Jonghyun and sliding down the zipper with ease, revealing his bare back.
“Oh, shut up, Minho.”

When Taemin got home he told his brother that his girlfriend had broken up with him but he was okay, really. He said he felt bad at first but now he was okay. He thought to himself that sometimes good things came from bad things and that if his girlfriend hadn’t broken up with him, he wouldn’t have met Mr. Bear. (He would have to thank her later)
He would probably never meet him again, but he felt good for now.
Before going to the bathroom to take a bath, Taemin tied the balloon to the chair in his room and took his wallet from his back pocket, leaving it on his desk.
On his way to the bathroom, something caught his attention; written in black marker on his light pink, heart-shaped balloon was as small “Smile :)” followed by a name and a phone number. Taemin touched his smiling lips and wondered how come he hadn’t noticed that before.
