Third Chapter
One night, when Minho didn’t feel like sleeping, he got up from his improvised bed on the floor and threw a glance at the young boy sleeping peacefully on his bed. He got up and made it to the door, stopping by his shelf to grab a book, any book, and since the room was entirely filled by the dark, he obviously didn’t see his soccer ball lying on the floor and stumbled upon it. Trying to grab at something as not to fall he put a hand on his desk, knocking his pencil case to the floor.
He flinched at the noise and cursed under his breath, hurrying to the door and releasing a deep sigh of relief when he noticed that Taemin didn’t wake up. He closed the door and turned on the corridor lights so he could be more careful as to not stumble upon things anymore.
After entering the kitchen he took a glass of milk from the fridge and sat at the table, lost in thoughts. He had to go to college the next day, still there he was, fully awake at two in the morning with Taemin watching him from the doorframe while rubbing at his tired eyes -wait.
Minho choked on the milk he had been gulping down and Taemin chuckled.
“God, Taemin, you scared me, what are you doing up? You have classes tomorrow, you should be resting!” he said after he stopped coughing and Taemin stared at him “Oh, hyung, you woke me up, why aren’t you sleeping? You have to go to college tomorrow, you should be resting!” the younger said mockingly, reproducing the tone the older used.
He stared at the younger and grinned, shaking his head disapprovingly, “Oh Taemin, you learn way too fast” he said patting the top of his head, after the smaller boy sat himself on the chair beside him.
Taemin took Minho’s half empty glass of milk and gulped the rest down his throat, not minding the indignant gasp his friend let out at his action. “H-Hey, I was drinking that!”
The younger let out a small laugh.
“Right, you were drinking that.” He said before yawning graciously behind his hand and the older couldn’t help but watch him. Taemin caught him staring and blushed, avoiding his gaze, long hair cascading over his shoulders.
“Hm, hyung, I actually wanted to talk to you about something…” he started quietly, still not meeting Minho’s eyes, playing with the now empty glass, the object turning left and right between his small hands.
“Okay, I’m listening” the older said, unconsciously holding his breath, the tone Taemin used worried him, he was nervous, no doubt about it. The younger cleared his throat and started playing with the end of his long hair with his right hand, his left hand clutching at the empty glass.
“R-remember this friend of mine I introduced you to some weeks ago?” he asked, looking up at Minho expectantly.
“Yeah, his name was Jonghyun, wasn’t it?” the older said, ignoring the odd pain in his heart and the tingling sensation in his stomach. He had a bad feeling about all this.
“We-We’re dating. A-and I don’t know, I wanted to know what you think about it because I couldn’t keep on hiding this from you since you’re my best friend and I trust you so much…” and Taemin kept on blabbering but Minho wasn’t hearing anymore, he stopped hearing after the first sentence. Hand clutching at his chest, because there was this pain in his heart, the sort of pain he had felt only once before, the day his father left them.
“Hyung?” he heard his friend calling him, worry clearly shown on his delicate face upon noticing the lack of attention he had been receiving .
“Oh, oh, t-that’s really great, Taemin-ah, I’m happy for you” the older said, trying to sound calm and not taken aback, ignoring the tingling in his heart.
“No, hyung, you’re not, I can see it in your eyes. You think I’m disgusting, right? That’s it, isn’t it? I knew I shouldn’t have told you…” he said burying his face in his own hands to hide his reddened cheeks and eyes wetting up at the corners.
“No! That’s not it, T-Taemin-ah, I swear, it’s just that… it was unexpected, but I’m really happy for you” the older said, trying to believe his own words. Putting that uncomfortable feeling aside, he tried to concentrate on what was happening, Taemin had looked up from his hands -at least he wasn’t crying, and had been staring at him, eyes shining and unsure.
“Really? You aren’t going to ignore me or anything, are you?”
“Of course not, Taemin! Why should I in the first place? God, we’ve been friends for ages, do you think something like this would affect our friendship?” he asked, not minding how hurt his voice had sounded, not only because Taemin hadn’t trusted him but also…
The younger lowered his head, feeling ashamed for not trusting his best friend. “I’m sorry, hyung, it’s just that I was scared… I couldn’t take it if you said you didn’t want to be my friend anymore…” Taemin’s voice was soft and the older knew he was being sincere.
Minho felt bad for being mad at him, he could understand Taemin’s situation.
He released a deep sigh and patted the younger’s knee signaling that he wasn’t mad, “That’s okay… Just- You know you can trust me, right?”
And that night, when Minho didn’t feel like sleeping, he really didn’t get any sleep.
The reason being that Taemin had oh-so casually asked him if they could sleep together on the same bed after he had hugged him, happy that he had been accepted and now, with Taemin asleep over his chest, breathing calmly and no worries shown on his face, just a light smile, the older had his arm draped around his waist in a possessive manner, wondering what happened to himself, when this happened to himself.
He stared at the ceiling, at his glow-in-the-dark stars until the sun rose and they didn’t glow so much anymore.
