Woo hoo!
Just got back from Lake Placid, doing some babysitting for my 18-month-old niece - what an experience!
At 18 months, she is in the 90th percentile for height and weight, and has just now caught up to Napoleon the cat in weight 8-)
Observations of a non-parent:
There are a lot of important lessons that I knew as a child, and forgot, which Sam reintroduced to me: eating hot dogs with your fingers can be a truly joyful experience, hug whomever you want whenever it moves you, dance whenever you are in the mood however you want to, sing often, keep self-questioning to a minimum, don't linger on unpleasantness - just go on to the next fun thing, try to guess what will happen next and express your delight when you are correct, and make daily have-to's into a game!
Other discoveries: Malvina Reynolds' children's songs are good for kids AND grown-ups. Songs from Mary Poppins are good for the soul, too.
And wow, is it hard to refer to oneself by one's mundane name after all these years in the SCA 8-)
Best of all, rocking a baby to sleep as they snuggle into you is without parallel.
