"Effy?"
Slamming her locker shut, Effy turned around slowly, praying that it wasn't Freddie, yet again. The redhead in front of her was not talking a mile a minute, which meant that it was the other twin, the quiet one, the doormat.
"Hi, Emily." Effy guffawed uncharacteristically when she finally saw the kit Emily had on. "Nice . . . fashion choices." The combination of a brown jumper with red teddy bear pajama trousers would have looked hilarious on anyone else, but the size of them made tiny Emily look like she was swimming.
"Yeah, they're JJ's." Emily took a deep breath.
"Something wrong?" Effy waited for more words to tumble out of Emily's lips.
Emily seemed to be locked in an internal struggle. Effy, never a fan of long conversations, was rapidly tiring of the only person who was giving her 'long conversations' these days. Luckily, Cook said that he'd be staying at his room tonight, which freed Effy up to do something interesting and chemical. Fun like that was always better with a second, but Panda had something to do. Emily seemed almost cool, when you could wrangle her away from Katie or Naomi and give her half a chance.
"Wanna get fucked up this afternoon?" Effy smiled and attempted to sound friendly. "I've got some gear back at mine."
Emily nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, let's get fucked up."
An hour passed and they were in Effy's room. Somehow, though most of their conversation was non-verbal, they ended up quite high and drunk, amiably lying on the floor side-by-side. Emily had remained silent in the car, silent as Effy waved Emily nonchalantly through a home devoid of people, silent as they had snorted and smoked and drank their way into blissful oblivion.
Effy looked over at Emily's still form and closed eyes. "You feeling good, Emily?"
"Yeah, good good. Good good. Wanna know a secret?"
"Depends. Do you wanna know a secret?"
Emily giggled, which was the cutest thing ever, and Effy couldn't stop herself from giggling for a good fifteen minutes after that.
"You go first." Emily prompted, still recovering from their collective giggle-fit.
"No, you go first!"
The idea of either of them going first was so hilarious, Emily had to laugh while kicking and snorting for another five minutes. Effy tried to restrain herself from giggling, yet again.
Effy, suddenly serious, leaned over Emily. "What's your secret?"
"Mmmm . . . well. I don't want to go home."
"That's not a secret." Effy shrugged casually. "I could figure that out, I could, by myself."
"Oh." Emily scrunched her face up in concentration. "Katie's upset with me because I'm gay."
"Knew both of those, too." Effy closed her eyes and lay back down. "Sweetie, you've got no secrets with me."
"I'm in love with Naomi?"
"You sure its not lust?"
Emily sighed. "I've got no fucking clue."
"Well, I didn't know that. You got me there."
Emily began to chortle which caused Effy to shake with mirth and another hour passed by.
"Are you hungry?" Emily asked when their mutual glee had subsided to the occasional smirk.
"No. My mom's out, but I could make food. If I was hungry. If you was hungry." Effy shrugged. "Are you?"
"No, I don't think I'll ever be hungry again. I feel great. Thank you." Emily audibly gulped air, "Could I stay here with you, just for the night?"
"Not a problem. Panda stays all the time. Just sit tight. Stay here for the night." Effy, amused with that little rhyme, giggled a bit more.
Emily reached over to her bag, got her phone and started to go into the hall.
"What you doing?" Effy mumbled.
"Gotta call home, let my parents know."
"Ah, good for you. I'll stay here."
Effy could hear bits and pieces of Emily's conversation down the hall.
"No mom, its Emily."
Dozy cow. Anyone could tell their voices apart, Effy thought.
"Uh, yeah, Karen's. She's going through some . . . stuff."
The sister of . . . Effy's mind clamped down, refusing to wander that path.
"We're, well, I, I am at Effy's tonight. She's also going through some . . . stuff."
The truth, really, Effy smirked, only the truth.
"Effy's on the floor, upset and we, I mean, I, I am not going to leave her there. She has to get to college somehow tomorrow. She's really upset. I, yes, yes, I'll call you tomorrow. Before college. Right."
Emily stumbled back into Effy's room. Flopping down next to Effy turned out to be a decent idea, a funny one, even, and they both found it hilarious.
Effy recovered first. "You're not a bad liar, you know. You're okay, Emily Fitch."
"Thanks." Emily felt quite chuffed. "Was that your secret?'
"Nope." Effy shook her head side-to-side. "I can't remember my secret now."
Sleep claimed them both swiftly. When she woke, Effy noticed the dried tracks of Emily's tears, the mascara running down her cheeks. Emily blearily opened her eyes, and Effy really looked at her, both of them completely sober for the first time in hours.
"Love, its all fucked up, innit?" Emily rasped.
"Yeah, yeah it is." Effy nodded, averted her eyes. "Let's get cleaned up."
Effy loaned Emily some clothes, and did Emily's hair and make-up. Without the drugs, Emily was fun to hang out with, not as loud as Katie, but still opinionated, mischievious.
Anthea had made breakfast, and although the dining room was filled with ominous silences and tension, the morning was quite pleasant. Emily called her mother before they left for college, and everything seemed well sorted. Driving to school was nice.
Out of the car, they didn't talk. They walked towards the college, nearly in synch despite the height difference. Effy stopped shy of the front steps, curious.
"You going to be joining us for politics today Emily?"
Emily shook her head no, and Effy tucked her own curiosity away, declined to ask more questions. "You can't stay with me tonight, but Panda might be up for it."
Emily nodded. "See you later. Thanks again, Effy."
Startled by Emily's gratitude, Effy stalked away, leaving Emily to fate's own devices.
